so i never liked the look of the spare tire hanging on the back door but after taking it off it looked kinda "stubby"
i thought of a fake utility box that operates as a brake light to take up some of the space the spare tire had occupied
i found a guy that cut the punisher skull on a piece of 16 gauge steel

some 12 gauge steel to make the box

flickr ***** and it hates you. :D

that being said, I looked at it and it's neat. Makes me wonder, if someone came up with a utility box that's the same size and shape as the spare tire, and mounts in place of the carrier, that could be quite interesting. Be a nice place to store recovery gear.

Gotta admit it, that turned out pretty cool.
Always wanted to relocate mine and that's a pretty cool way of hiding it's original spot..
You said maybe bigger, but I'd say maybe wider.. don't want it to cover the lift gate glass but perhaps making 2 nearly identical boxes and mounting them against the sides of that one for storage? Could even make them different shaped to fit the tailgate, and mount them against your new box for stability.. even run wiring through the insides of the three for more lights if you came up with another cool design..
Maybe that's just me, but wanted to add my input and say looks hella nice man! \\:D/

Lowes and other hardware stores sell plastic plugs that you can insert into the bolt holes in the tailgate. They are black but can be painted and from 10 foot away look as if there aren't any bolt holes at all.
But this is another way I guess if you don't like the spare there or don't like the look of nothing being there .
But why not make it open so you can store things inside ?

I didn't want stuff rattling around in there with the lights and wiring
Don't really need to put anything in it anyway

Nicely done! I had been toying with the idea of doing that using an ammo box to put my ratchet straps, tow rope, jumper cables, flares, rocket launchers, rags, shovel, tarp, etc. Hmm...my tailgate isn't big enough, lol.

i'm toying with the idea of replacing the spare with a scepter mfc and mounting the spare inside the jeep.

ok so i thought the box was too small bad planning of the design...my bad...
so i started to think of what else would look cool on the back door then thought of the old jerry can gas cans so i got a fake can that is actually a storage box and cut and welded the skull design in it filled it in with acrylic to make the lense mounted it and pow ...done
welded in and some body work

Unique idea, nice craftsmanship.

But I gotta ask now, where do you haul your spare?

Very nice work. Very creative. Well executed!

Not to take anything away from what was done... But personally I've never understood why anyone would want to remove the spare from the tailgate. I mean, it's a jeep for gosh sake! Lol. A spare on the tailgate just adds to the traditional, rugged, offroad looks. That's why every wrangler still has one. If I took the spare off my jeep I'd feel like I neutered it. Lol. But that's just me.

Yeah I get it but I personally don't like a big ugly spare tire hangin on my back door
They do look better on the wrangler though
I am in and out of my back Door all day for work and was worried about the wear and tear on the hinges with the weight of the spare on it
As far as having a spare..I don't off road at all and it has been close to 20 years since I needed to use a spare tire so I'll take my chances

Cheers!!

I removed my spare for a few days and hated the look , like you said its a Jeep thing, without it on there just looks strange IMO.
But to each his own, whatever trips your trigger is fine ............

I actually prefer the tire on the back too.
A. It looks "right" for a Jeep
B. A lot easier to get to should you need it. Especially if you have a flat rear tire.
C. Doesn't get all corroded and rusted in place like underslung spares
D. Larger tires still fit fine, unlike most inside mounted spares.

As said, it's a personal preference. Just because I disagree doesn't make you mod any less neat.
