I would like to remove the rear tire mount on a Liberty and have the holes filled in and then repaint that area. Anyone know of a place that sells a smaller temporary tire that would fit the Liberty? In additon, a mount that could be installed inside the back area off to one side? Thanks!

Welcome to JKJ Country.....I've seen some people that relocated their spare tires to the roof w/roof rack for off-roading purposes. They either left the studs as is or removed and filled them. I'm sure a local body shop could do that for you.

How do you intend to mount the spare. On the wheel well, like the Jeep ZJ's? Go to your tire shop and find a 27 or 28" tire.

Thanks for the welcome!

I will be using the rear door alot and would like to get the heavy tire off that area. I am thinking of one of those temporary type tires for short term use. Not sure what you mean by a 27 or 28 inch tire but guess that it is the actual height of the stock spare tire. I have not bought a Liberty yet but will shortly so not sure of that measurment. Do you know if tire stores carry those temp. tires and rims with the right hole pattern for the Liberty? Thanks for the info. Robert

Stock tire size is 235/70r16. Check local tire stores, online (ebay, craigslist), or check for spares out of Jeep ZJ and XJ for temporary tire sizes.

IIRC the wheels off of Ford Rangers are the same bolt pattern (5 x 4.5) so you might check for those as well. As for stock sizes, depending on what year/model you get it could have 215x85s, 225x75s, or the 235s mentioned above. My '03 had the 215s on it when I bought it.

So I take it you are looking at a used Liberty? The new Libertys (KK) have the spare mounted underneath due to the swing-up rear gate.

the amount of use you put on the rear door can not be much more than my wife she is in and out of that thing 5 times a day ,out side sales
we have a big heavy 245/75 10 ply MTR hanging on it for a over 6 months now and have no issues with it
I think that keeping a light weight OE size tire out side would be better than keeping a little tire inside
you will be giving up more room then you think
