i had a $2000 system installed in my kj in 2007 by circuit city and everything has been fine except for one thing.
First, its a 7 speaker system, 2 tweeters, and the 4 that are in all 4 doors, and the sub in the back. it is also powered by a 600w amp.

last year during 2 occasions, i noticed that the 2 main speakers on the drivers side was not working. the tweeter was working, so i tapped on the door to see if it might be a loose wire. it didnt work. so i turned the balance to each speaker just to be sure that indeed they were not working. then after messing around a bit i found out that just by simply turning the volume up, that the 2 speakers began to work again at any volume level as they should. this happened twice. and then no problems since then.
\

until today i noticed it started doing the same thing again. adjusting the balance all the way to the drivers side, front and back, they were silent all while the tweeter still worked.

as was last time, all i have to do is turn the volume up about half way and they then kick on and start working.

unlike last time, they continue to work fine until i turn the switch off. upon turning the switch on either for steroe operation only or for starting the engine, i must now cut the volume up about half way to get any sound fro that side.

anyone have any clue as to what might cause this? i figure if it was a shorted or loose wire, it would go off and on with fist pounding or road vibration, but the volume trick is all that will give any results.

any advice before i have someone look at it???

I can only think of two scenerios...

1) The Amp - some amps have an "auto-on" feature that kicks them on when they sense power on the speaker wires. Most amps use a dedicated remote turn on wire. One possibility is that the amp isn't sensing these front midranges from the head unit, and isn't coming on. Being that it sounds like you have a single 600W amp, though, that doesn't seem possible as the tweeters and rears are coming on. I think it's either all on or all off.

2) The head unit - seems like maybe something could be wrong and there is no signal coming from the headunit. Still seems wierd though, if it's a standard headunit you'd only have 4 speaker outputs - FR, FL, RR, RL. It doesn't make sense that the tweeter works and that the midrange doesn't as I think they'd run from the same source from the HU to Amp, and Amp to speakers.

What kind of amp? How many connections are on there?

fixed it. turns out CC didnt solder the connections on that one side and just wrapped the new wire into the old by making a crappy pigtail twist and a loose one at that.

took off all door panels and re-twisted and soldered all connections.
