What oil is required in the 5sp std ****** in my 2003?
How much do I need?
Do I need the same oil elsewhere? (ie. tranfer case...)

My service manual is at home & I want to pick up the oil on the way home...

You will need 4.2 pints of synchromesh trans. fluid, there is a write-up somewhere either here or the lostkj site on the tools needed.Go with the synthetic oil,you will need a 14 and 17 mm hex wrench and a pump to get the fluid in..

I went to a dealer to get the ****** fluid for mine. It states in the manual that this fluid specifically must be used. I don't believe you will find it on the store shelves either. I believe it has to be purchased from the dealer. It only cost $4.50/quart IIRC. You need a 17mm hex for the bottom drain and the 14mm for the fill port. If you don't have them, they can be purchaed at Sears. You can get a decent pump at Harbor Freight for cheap.

Any Synchromesh fluid can be used. Pennzoil makes one you can find at Pep Boys and you can get full synthetic from Amsoil.

I'll ask this again since you guys have the 5 spd MT...
What do you think of your transmission? Mine is 1) very clunky shifting from 1-2-3. 2) It is very noisy like it has marbles in it. It's an '03 with 45k miles which I purchased about a year ago. Of course the dealer says it's fine. I have driven Wranglers which have the same transmission and it was not clunky but was a bit noisy. Not as noisy as mine though.
I did change the oil once to the Penzoil Synchromesh with no effect.

PS I'm originally from Ottawa but now in Michigan

Mine was a little clunky but not too bad,It's smoother with the Amsoil synthetic I put in last year.

My standard ****** is a bit noisy...not that bad but is seen like there could be better insulation/sound deadning under the carpet...if I ever have to remove my carpet, I will add B-Quiet....similar to dynomat.....

The dealer wants 15$ per litre of ****** oil.........Amsoil here we come....

Some noise may be normal for this transmission but how much noise is normal ?? It does not explain why it's worse than a Wrangler which also uses the nv-3550 transmission.
