Starter Issue, or Not?

From time to time when starting, the starter does not disengage. I roll the key back and stop it, and on the second try it does disengage.

I guess that is not the starter, but the solenoid, which is usually sold as part of the starter.

It does not do this all the time. Only every now and then.

I was thinking it could be low voltage but I have not been able to confirm that. It usually only sits for about 4 days or so without being driven.

I'm thinking I could pull all the contacts from the starter and clean them to assure a good electrical connection.

Any ideas? Thanks

It powers out and spring returns. Probably needs a strip and clean

I think it was probably about 50 years ago that I first realized maybe by trying it, that it was just easier and faster to just put in a new starter. Of course, I guess there is cleanings and then CLEANINGS. I was never much of a cleaner.

With the new starter or even rebuilt, I get new brushes. Which is the part that wears out in the starter (motor). Which I suppose start wearing out about the time the solenoid starts sticking.

But currently I am at the point where it won't do it again. It hasn't for weeks.

I still also haven't checked the voltage after letting it set for a week, to see if maybe it's just too low on the voltage and thus triggering it.

It seems to be like the clacking of the front propeller shaft, the one that goes from the transfer case to the front differential. That does not want to clack again, I don't know why.

I found the joint to replace to make it work nice again. But it refuses to misbehave.
I like the idea of doing both at the same time.
