Due to a limited budget my Libby is only getting tow hooks and a custom skid plate. Hopefully will get sliders. Not getting a lift this year. Wondering if any one else runs stock?

Not the mountains.
I've seen a couple on here and on LOST that are running stock and they are still having fun off-road. From what I've read a good set of tires is the biggest part of it if your staying stock or close to it. Also you have to be a bit more careful in certain places since you don't have the benefit of additional clearance from a lift.

I've seen some on lost and looks to be a few here as well. People say just watch the lines and I should be ok. currently running BFG A/t 235/70/16. Haven't let me down getting to some fishing holes.

Stock all the way. Done a fair amount of off-roading. Have to be careful without a lift and take a safe line. Everyone in the 4x4 world rags on IFS, but my biggest complaint is the open diff. Want to drop some $ on a diff locker. TJKJ recommended a DTT locker in the rear. I'd like to put lockers front and back but on limited budget I have to get the biggest bang for the buck.

I offroaded in the stock OEM wranglers until they wore out, then switched to my Yoko's.

The libby is a great stock offroader in my opinion.

I'm stock too, but with the factory Off-Road group (plates, hooks, ****** & ps coolers, Trac-Lok, etc.) ... I'm also have some recovery gear (straps, farm jack, compressor, etc.)

I'm with you: the KJ it's an amazing stock off-roader...

But, soon comes a full-OME Lift... then maybe a ARB front bumper, then maybe a rear DTT, then maybe a 4.10:1... :D

Cheers:)

oh
just buy some taller tires, thinner is ok if you dont have a lift and need to get it in.

a lift really gives you more articulation, which helps with traction, it doesnt necessarily mean you can get over bigger things. bigger tires raise your height.

the reason for skids is to protect expensive damage, so obviously they pay off, if you are limited, you go protection, tires, then worry about the rest.

sorry i dont mean to hijack this post but which tire is taller? 225-75-16 or 235-70-16, ive read somewhere that the 225 tire is like an inch and half or just half inch taller than the 235 tire, is this true or not?

I am pretty much stock. My skids, hooks and rock rails are OEM. I was out twice last month.

Are you anywhere near Orange County NY?? We have a run scheduled for 4/25 on private property. You will need skids and hooks minimum. We have pleanty of recovery gear and it will be needed on this run. I am sure Brian won't mind another KJ.

It depends on the brand of tire but here is how you calculate it.

225/75R16 => 225 is tire width in mm, 75 is ratio of tire width/tire height (of 1 side), 16 is rim diameter in inches.

tire diameter/height = 225 x 0.75 x 2 / 10 / 2.54 + 16 = 29.3 in

230/70R16 => 230 is tire width in mm, 70 is ratio of tire width/tire height (of 1 side), 16 is rim diameter in inches.

tire diameter/height = 230 x 0.70 x 2 / 10 / 2.54 + 16 = 28.7 in

so the 225's are predicted to be about a half an inch taller in diameter (29.3 vs 28.7) and will give you about a quarter of an inch more in ground clearance.

Our '04 Sport is totally stock.
We've taken it out on rough gravel roads several times. Even without any skid plates. We just take it nice and easy and don't do anything crazy with it and still have plenty of fun.
Mopar skid plates are now on their way from the U.S.A. ( No Chrysler dealerships here stock skid plates for our KJ anymore! Except for one dealership who services our truck was willing to order everything for us from the states for cheaper than if I order them from the U.S.! Go figure! So, they get my business!)
The lift kit and new tires have to be put off until the middle of May due to an unexpected $1200.00 veterinarian bill!
That's life!
In the mean time I have some small projects on the go.
Custom gauge pod for oil pressure/temp, and volt gauge.
Custom light bar for my KC 6"X9" and 8" round off road lights, back up lights.
By the middle of summer we should be stylin'!
The in-laws are buying me a Detour Backbone for my Birthday... In August.:( Just have to wait another four and a half months is all! But at least I know what I'm getting!:) Then I can mount my 9500 lbs. winch which is now sitting in the box serving as a coffee table in my rec room!:D
Oh well, better to wait and do it right the first time then to spend money twice and mickey mouse it!;)

Lol, I grew up in Payne County Oklahoma. 60% of all our roads were gravel. I was greatful for my factory skids. I'd fly down those roads (50-60mph on gravel) when i first got my KJ.

I'd never even thought about this as being off-roading, but taking that into consideration, I've had mine out on the 'trails' quite a bit.

I guess it's not real off- roading, but for us it has to do until
our skid plates arrive and get installed by me!;)

I too enjoy flying down gravel roads!
At night in the ******* rain on partially snow covered slippery,
sloppy gravel paths in my Ralley Mini at 90+
miles per hour sideways with 900 watts of killer light!:D
I somehow don't think a KJ could handle that, let alone be built
to handle that kind of use!

Ryan (still want to call you Socks),

Let me know how your custom gauge pod project goes. I'm going to do the same thing to mine when it gets paid off, and I'd really like to have some good tips on the process. I assume you're doing a gauge pod on the A-Pillar?

I am considering one of three places to mount the pod.
1. Above the rear view mirror
2. On the dashboard above the two middle A/C vents.
3. To the right of the Instrument binnacle on the curved portion of
the hood that acts as a sun visor for the Instrument cluster.

I would love to have one on the A pillar. However, I rely on the grab handle on the A pillar to get into the vehicle because I'm a gimp! :D
I am sketching out an A pillar gauge pod with an integral grab handle. (Old fashioned way with a draughting table, pencil and paper!)
If I can come up with a realistic, good looking version, I'll prototype one out of modeling clay and see if it will function for both a grab handle and gauge pod. I have a feeling it will end up looking like crap though!
Never know!

I don't know if this would work, but what about the spot below the A/C controls??

My CB radio fits in there nice and clean.
Of course it might look good up above the rear view mirror as well!
Decisions, decisions, decisions!
My gauges are 2.125 inch diameter, so they will not fit there. Under the dash trim to the right of the steering wheel would of been nice, but a 6'5", my legs will more than likely hit them when I get in the truck.
