Been lurking around for a few months. I own an '04 KJ 4WD Sport (with no ABS) v6 Auto. It is arguably one of the best cars I've ever owned. Since I've owned it, I've only done one set of tires (it has 76K right now), one set of brakes and today I just did the front hubs.

I used this guide : http://www.jeepkj.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46865

I want to thank pts5ba for writing a laid back how to that really did the job in relaxing the stress away from this project. That's not easy to do.

It all went well, *HOWEVER*...when I was removing one of the 3 e-torx bolts, I put a small tear in the CV boot. The tear is about 3/16 to 1/4 inch and is before the first "baffle" on the boot. With the axle back in the hub assembly, it's buried pretty far in there.

Just wondering how long I have until I have to replace the boot. I wasn't able to replace the boot today (finances and time) and we hardly ever use the 4WD. I had to smoosh it with my fingers to get it to weep any grease...

I've been a VW head for years and a rip in the boot is usually the kiss of death. I just wonder since we don't use the 4WD much if I have some months to wait before I have to tear it apart again.

Thanks pts5ba for an excellent how to.

You do know I am sure that the CVs turn all of the time, so it will be flinging grease out as soon as you start down the road more than likely maybe not a lot right at first but you should replace it ASAP

Yeah...it sux. I knew the minute I saw it. But, I wasn't in a position to change it right there.

Times are tight and doing the hubs already put me behind.

I think the worse thing is the grease that came out was perfectly clear/white.

OK...after being pissed...upset...embarrassed and basically just questioning my technical skills for the last 2 days, while gobs of green/gray goop flung itself in snot-sized projectiles all over the hub carrier, wheel well and control arms, I finally decided to do something. Anything!!

So, being a bicycle mechanic for the last 25 years and watching the state of tube patches get better and better, I am trying the impossible. I have used a pro-grade bike patch to see if it will stay and at least keep the booger-barrage at bay for a few weeks while I have other projects going on.

This wasn't one of the "glue-less" patches...this was the full blown one with the cement, roughing up the surface etc..and it looks pretty good! I just took it around the block at ~30 mph and it is holding well. These are ultra flexible and automatically vulcanize once they hit, so we'll see.

I'll keep this thread updated and let you guys know.

Thanks for the great welcome!
