I have a 2007 Liberty and it is warning about a defective gas cap. I have replaced it twice and it is still doing the warning with that annoying bell/chime. I have checked into other reasons and those problems do not exist.

I am beyond fed up with it. Does anyone know how to disable it? I take full responsibility for doing it. Would pulling a fuse do it? Failing that, where is the little bugger and I'll take care of it with wire cutters!!

Hey @RussellG -

I suggest for the gas cap message that you (or your mechanic) do a smoke test on the evap system. Just because the code shows gas cap does not necessarily mean it. It points you in the direction that the system itself needs attention - something as simple as a cracked fitting, split / rotted hose or line, etc.

Thanks DadOSix,

Six - really? Busy guy!

Yes, I know about the smoke test, but I also understand this could be a very difficult problem to find. Are you sure you don't have a more clandestine solution?

Thanks, Russ

Yup - 6 -

I am conservative when it comes to repair. Not much on firing the parts cannon without knowing what i need. I will test the issue until i know for sure. It could also be the evap can. I do the smoke because it is very obvious and tests the whole messy ststem in one go.

Do you any info on how to carry out this smoke test? Do I just get a vaping thing and blow smoke into whatever? :)

no vapes! Baby oil -

Check out this guy on youtube. He also has a bunch on stuff on the 3.7 4.7 engines - like quick and easy to change the rockers. How to do timing chains, etc.

My daughter had the same issue last year in her 2011 KK. I changed gas caps and cleared the code and it would always come back. It ended up being the hard plastic line running from the purge valve, next to the battery, towards the firewall. It had a small crack at the connector. Cost me $40 for the replacement from the dealer. I was disconnecting the line to do a smoke test when it split enough to come off the fitting. Hope this helps.
