So I am checking out that current Liberty ad on TV, the one with the lady setting up the portable basket ball hoop. No cover on the spare. Looks good, I might try it.

My KJ didn't come with a spare cover. The week I bought it I got a gash in my spare wheel that will never come out. Brand new aluminum wheel damaged permanently now. ](*,)

I now have a spare tire cover.

Can't imagine that helping with mine as it is a soft cover. You must have something more durable.

Sun damage

I took the cover off the day I got it. I have the graphite Renegade style wheels, and they just look too damn good to cover up. The only thing I'm worried about is sun damage.

Nope, I've got the soft cover. If I had it the week I bought my Jeep I wouldn't have a gash in my new aluminum spare wheel. #-o The $43 soft spare cover is cheap insurance IMO.

Oh, and in the owners manual it specifically says to remove the spare cover from time to time to check the air pressure in the spare and clean the wheel. This prevents the corrosion problem.

I agree it looks sharp with no cover there. But I'd rather have a protective cover to serve it's purpose. Just my opinion.

LEt's see that gash

Got any pics? How did it happen? I can't be that bad if you think the soft cover would have prevented it.

Basically the handle on my trailer dolly came into contact with the wheel when I started up an incline due to a hitch mount that was too short (my fault). But if the spare tire cover had been there, the worst case scenario is the cover would have been ripped and the wheel would have turned out a lot better.

Makes more sense

I was imagining you backing into something, or someone hitting you from behind. I still think if it was hard enough to gouge a chuck out of a wheel it would have gone through a cloth cover and still damaged the wheel. It probably would have gone through the hard ABS cover and damaged the wheel...but maybe not.

No, you'd be surprised at how easy these aluminum wheels will scratch. The foamy brush at the local carwash will scratch them if you aren't careful. It's really kind of pitiful. Having a layer of cloth there (i.e., spare tire cover) can really mean the difference between gouging the wheel or saving it if it's not a major blow.

I upgraded four wheels. The cover hides the remaining non-matching original steel spare -- a definite asset. 8-[

My wife blew out a sidewall on the '05. I said let's buy a cheap used tire untill tax refund time and we'll get Revos. I went to a used shop, got a $25.00 tire. The was dirty when they put it on the spare rack, but after I had it a couple of days (and cleaned it off) it now has a huge scrape about 7 inches long. That's why I keep the cover on hers now.
I can't say for sure if they did it when they put it on the tire machine, but I'm almost sure I would have noticed it before.
