Here is the foundation for both the Jeep Compass & Jeep Patriot.... right down to the AWD.

That link leads to a new Dodge crossover vehicle named Caliber. Where does the connection come from? It is a different class of vehicle as well. O

Caliber/Patriot/Compass are all using the same platform

the 2 new small jeeps will be more geared towards the rally crowd....as opposed to rock crawling.

all 3 are basically the same cept for the sheetmetal

Exactly, Jon. The Compass is almost a twin of the Caliber while the Patriot will have an "xj-ish" body on the same platform. Top end models will get a 2.4L inline 4, "electric" AWD, and a CVT. Think of them as the Jeep Imprezza and the Jeep Forester and you will be in the right ball park.

The word "platform" is used too loosely these days.

A "platform" is just a fixed set of points on a vehicle that allow them to be built on the same assembly line

It does NOT mean they cannot be Trail Rated.
