Hi,

Those interested the 2002-2007 Jeep KJ (Liberty/Cherokee) can take the Mishimoto Racing Thermostat - listed as:

Racing Thermostat, fits Jeep Liberty 3.7L 2002-2012: Model: MMTS-JGC-99L

Ref: https://www.mishimoto.eu/jeep-liberty-3-7l-racing-thermostat-02-12.html

In the hot Aussie sun, my engine was feeling the heat, and as I had warped a block and alloy head before it made me nervous.

I found this replacement thermostat that opens at a much lower 180* F compared to the standard 195* F. If you're in a cooler climate you likely won't need one, but where I am you do not want to cook yourself in the bush.

I have had to remove the Thermostat on my 3.7 V6, but due to my remote location have not been able to replace the faulty one. I live in a mild to warm climate in South Africa and although the vehicle seems to run a bit cooler than with the Thermostat unit, no problems to date. Does anyone have experience and/or comments operating the car without a Thermostat for extended periods?

racing thermostat LOL
I think if the title “racing thermostat” disturbs you so much and brings you angst you should reach out to the distributor who coined the title and give them some enlightenment!

Running the engine cool won't help with fuel consumption or engine life, I'd look at getting a thermostat if possible.

Or he could just continue to point out to unwary consumers that there is no such thing as a racing thermostat…. After all it doesn’t really make you Jeep go any faster and depending on what kind of fan control is on your 3.7, could actually make the engine run HOTTER in some conditions.

While this statement may seem counter intuitive, the cooling system, comprised of the thermostat, radiator, fan and fan controller, is designed to work as a system to keep the engine running within parameters, and altering the parameters of one component can effect the operation of the system as a whole in unexpected ways.

While the Cummins CTD in myDodge Ram is a different animal then the CRD in my Jeep Liberty, it is an expected but known result that replacing the OEM 190* thermostat with a 180* rated from the earlier generation trucks actually makes the truck run hotter under highway towing conditions, despite its massively oversized and over rated cooling system, simply because the thermostat and the ECM controlled fan clutch are no longer coordinated in their efforts to cool the mighty Cummins.

Of course, it IS your Jeep, so definitely install whatever thermostat you want!!!
