Alright, so here's the story:

Back 2 years ago, I had Sears install a Diehard Gold battery, and replace one of the cables. So, long about a year later, I noticed some corrosion just on the one post (one with the red cover, forgot if it's + or-) and I cleaned it, and didn't think much of it. Then about 6 months ago, I cleaned it because the KJ didn't start up. 3 months ago, cleaned it. And about a month ago I cleaned it, and look now. Think I have an issue? The other post is fine. It's under a 3 year warranty. Also, it ate through the hood insulation as well. Lines up perfectly. I'm going to see if I can get them to replace the insulation too, the battery is what caused it. Thanks for reading.

it wont happen usually on the negative post, doesn't have active current running through it. the oxydation is from electricity and the lead and moisture in the air. nothing you can do about it really, the caps help but not a ton. just happens to be the type of metal on that particular battery. you don't have a case. it's normal, as far as i'm concerned.

Is the battery bolted down right?

oxydation is corrosive and active...it makes sense that it would damage that insulation. if its not bolted in right tho, it might be too close to that insulation causing that.

Not sure, all I know is that I didn't touch it, other than cleaning it. In all the batteries I've put in, I've never had either of these issues.

Red is positive to answer your question.

Seems like the corrosion is building up fast. Maybe the weather down there? Since you got a 3 year waranty take it back if you have the receipt and see what happens.

Geez what a frustrating ordeal. I had some issues with the battery in my Wrangler and ended up getting an Optima - Yellow top but a Red top would be just as good. After I installed the Optima there were no more corrosive issues. But those are not cheap. The battery in my Liberty is doing the same thing so I cleaned it really well and I'm staying ahead of it But I will replace it with an Optima. Over kill ...maybe but it does take care of the issue from my experience.

Thanks, I thought it was.

I never had this issue with the Durango, Rover is fine, and so on.

Next week I'll take it in sometime. Not to urgent, but before next summer.

HJ, Chrysler should have never used any lead acid battery with removable caps. They vent way more than a sealed battery.
Even though you can talk to Sears about replacement etc, expelling gas from these caps is normal. This is not the right solution for the KJ.
The best AGM sealed batteries will solve this corrosion problem. Both Odyssey and Optima would be a better choice.
I have a couple of Indy racing batteries like these Platinum that are sealed and have no corrosion problems. You might just consider getting into a sealed no maintenance.
I will generally get 7 years out of these batteries with proper charging.

Here you can see the terminal HJ polished, (wire brush and emory cloth) with a light coating of Vaseline! This one is now ready for the boat again.

I will get a better battery next go around, when I'm out of warranty. Thanks.

I would try to get Sear immediately to swap out your current battery for a sealed no Maintenance!!
What have you got to loose?
Try it, they might go for it!

I also forgot to mention that the stock installation included felt pads.

And you can use felt hair pad (carpet store under pad) to cover the caps and duct tape them, covering the removable caps, this stops most venting, and also gives good protection from the cold.
Also when replacing your battery, you should also consider replacing the battery temperature sensor pad.
It is located below the battery and costs $7

I will, definitely. Just have more urgent things this week, Jeep still drives fine.

I didn't know batteries could catch a cold? :D What's that mean, never heard of it here...

But it makes it very difficult to have your KJ look clean. Snow& Ice= Salt corrosion, cold temps = one dirty Jeep!

I couldn't care less about how clean my Jeep was if out side looked like that now...

That's a possibility. Does anyone know the height of the stock battery?

eeehr...I thought all '03 and up KJ's came with an optima?

Could be an export or CRD thing.

That battery is to big. The handle is rubbing the insulation imo.

Use vaseline on the terminals and you should be ok. (Not between the terminal and the connector, just on top of it, like that gold spray they used on the minus)

You have a case if they put in the wrong type of battery, (which I think) that thing is big enough to start a CRD....:(

There are actually 2 sizes you can get in the Optima Battery with the same performance specs. Instead of a group 34 I have a smaller version in my Dodge van (but the full size 34 would have worked) and it has been great for the past couple years and I use an inverter off the battery with the truck off - no problem starting after long use.
Great batteries but they are more expensive.

A CASE?

Why would they replace the torn insulation under a five year old hood?

There's nothing wrong with the battery; you should have cleaned the corrosion up and put an anti-corrosion coating on both of them after bolting the terminal back up.
