Hi all, so yesterday my daughter got her first car into the driveway... well second as her first she missed the rusted frame and we had to sell it for parts....
FIRST JEEP THO!!!
Anyhow, I have been doing reserch and trying to work out what she has and what can and should be done...
So via VIN I got the build sheet, it says it has the tow group and the HD cooling package...
but there is no mechanical fan on it only elec, now I suppose someone may have taken it off trying to get better MPG but the shroud does not look large to handle the extra fan for the HD cooling as I expected...
so I am confused a bit, and thought I should turn to the forum and ask...
Perhaps in 2003 it was differently setup?
putting build sheet here and a pic of the engine compartment.
any guru's out there can offer some insight?

You are correct, that is certainly not the HD cooling. From looking at that fan, thats not even the factory electric fan and it appears to be wired with crimp connectors.

Im not certain, but I 'think' the HD cooling package came with a single speed electric fan. The non-HD cooling came with a two speed electric fan. It appears you only have two wires there, so that may be a single speed fan. That would line up with it, at some point, having the HD cooling package.

I'd be careful with that aftermarket fan. Who knows if its capable of keeping it cool and there is one thing you should know, the 3.7 should not be overheated.

yes I looked and it only has two wires, single speed fan, I read somewhere that the two speed fan came out after a few years, this being a 2003 I thought that would be normal.
This electric fan sure fits in there perfectly, looks engineered for the install, not a universal I don't think...

I know for sure it had HD cooling from factory due to build sheet...

we have had it out on hwy and out off road now for over an hour each time and it held temp nicely but weather being cooler these days that may not be a good indicator...

do you know if the shroud and dual fan setup from a CRD would transplant?
I think all CRD had dual fan and there are a few being parted out...
not having good luck finding a 3.7 with HD parts...

Any reason why you want the HD cooling package? If your daughter isn't working it hard the standard setup will be fine, most were not sold with the HD setup, my CRD only has the engine driven fan, no electric fan.

First it appears that this is an aftermarket likely Dorman cooling fan, I suspect its ok for basic daily driver stuff but as soon as its working hard I have trouble trusting it.
Second, one of the reasons for selecting a Libby was that it could tow a bit and another is that its small and can get in and out of stuff much eaiser than a bigger rig, also self recovery is way eaiser with a small 4x4. Also she works in the conservation field, saveing eagles, tracking wolf packs and stuff like that, so the next step in the goal list is to get a small tow behind house she can live in. In theory without the HD cooling I understand the Libby can tow 3500lb but with the HD cooling its 5000lb
Hard to find anything one could reasonabley live in for half a year boondocking under 3500lb - in her university student price range anyhow...
she would not have to tow alot, but likely twice a year to get to and from her summer possition, and each of those times will be in mountains and possibly half way across Canada...

I'd imagine all the wiring for the HD cooling setup is present there. You could just buy a new clutch fan, a new electronic fan and a get a shroud from the junkyard. Can't be terribly expensive (check Rock Auto), and those are parts that will give the Jeep a reliability boost since they are new rather than 20 years old, so good preventative maintenance in a way.

ya thats where I am going at it now, not much where I am on Vancouver island tho and shipping on something the size of a shroud is gonna make it pricy I bet. I will take my time and keep my eyes open... Time will tell... RN I am going to fit a decent temp guage with an alarm to protect from overheating it.

Looks like Rock Auto has the electric fan, clutch, and fan blade - only about $400 cdn shipped.

I found an outlet in Sherwood Park AB that seems to specialize in tearing down Libby's he says he has all the parts for $200 but does not include shipping...
Still hunting :)

Main issue is the shroud, without that shroud the clutch fan wont do half its job....
