Trans issue. Not sure what happened

Headed to Knoxville this morning to visit a site and was going about 75 and noticed the jeep started to buck slightly. Almost like bad gas was in my. It wasn't a violent buck. I let off the gas and nothing so I pressed the gas again and it bucked some more. Decided to change lanes so I could get off the next exit and heard a loud pop and when I pressed the gas the trans wasn't enagaging. As I was pulling over I heard something that sounded like a bad pulley chattering.

Put the jeep in park and it didn't engage. Was slightly rolling forward down the hill. I also could hear something sounding like it was spinning.

No codes thrown either.

I'm thinking the trans just took a crap on me.

Any other ideas?

Sounds like something broke. Check the fluid and see if that's trashed.

I will add some more to this, was typing the original post on my phone waiting on the tow truck.

When I pulled over and put the jeep in park I didnt feel it "catch" or sound like it engaged reverse or park.

Right before the pop sound and loss of trans it the bucking I was feeling felt as if you were to turn cruise control off and on rapidly. I had cruise control on and thought maybe it was acting up.

The sound I heard while it was in "park" but not stopping sounded like the solenoids I usually hear when its in drive. They just sounded a bit louder.

The trans was serviced (fluid drained, not flushed, new fluid and new filters) this was done back in august. Before then it was done in February as well.

I didnt get a chance to see if the fluid had any issues before the tow.

I could not force any codes out of it either after turning it off and letting it sit while waiting for the tow.

Is it 2wd? If it's 4wd the transfer case could be involved.

4wd.

Front drive shaft is currently out. Has not been put into 4wd with that driveshaft out.

If the transfer case blew would that cause the entire trans to stop? Even if it wasn't being used?

Don't forget the transfer case is between the trans and the rear driveshaft...It could be possible but I'm sorry...it doesn't sound probable.

Transmission could have crapped out, or could be the transfer case, or the torque converter went, or the flexplate cracked and separated where it mounts to the crank, or the torque converter to flexplate bolts came loose and dropped out or snapped, or could have blown the rearend, or a u-joint could have snapped, or...

That didn't not happen. Haha

I looked under it after calling the tow company and my ride to come get me. I didn't see any fluid leaks. No hanging parts either.

Waiting to hear from the dealer.

Heard back from the dealer and the transfer case is the culprit. When I changed the fluid a while back, (first time I had done it since I had the jeep and put about 6500 miles on it. The fluid that came out was black. So I am guessing the previous owner didnt think to have that serviced along with the differentials or trans)

Dealer quote for new mopar unit with installation is $2100, with a 3 year/ 100k mile warranty.

I am not opposed to doing it myself. Any recommendations on best place to get a new/rebuilt t-case?

I'd grab a used low mileage one from a boneyard. I'm new to the Liberty, but in general transfer cases normally last a long long time unlike an automatic transmission.

For that price I'd consider getting an Atlas 2 from Advanced Adapters... It would be slightly more money if you install yourself. The install wouldn't be too bad I'd think... Or browse the junkyards for one in decent shape.

You could get a reman'd one for about 1k shipped... that way if you did it yourself, you could consider getting that and get an OME lift and consider the lift almost free? :signs8:

Assuming you have a NV242 Transfer Case here's a reman'd NV242 TC, but I'm not sure which TC you've got.

I have been looking for some remanned ones. I like the idea of the "free" lift!
