...any ATF will work in your t-case,does not have to be ATF+4 as the t-case and trans do not share fluid.You can run 5w-20 motor oil also if you like and in hot climates 5w-30 would be okay also but no thicker.No clutches in the 242 t-case also so your safe running any ATF or 5w-20 motor oil.

I found this while searching for t-case info. I have the 231 and was wondering if the above still applies. Also, in reference to using 5w-30, what is a "hot climate?"

I believe the 231 does have clutches, so ATF+4 only.

Somewhere in your owner's manual, it has the temp range for the different oils.

No clutches in any t-case offered in a KJ.

I've run 5w-20 in my 231 with no issues before(not a KJ 231 though) and many Borg/warners and I currently run 20w-50 in my Atlas but it's gear to gear(no chain).


When in doubt just use ATF.

I'd just use ATF+4, so if you have any left you can use it for the ******, tcase again, or PS system.
