I'm pretty sure I've blown up my TC, (NP 242 SelcTrac) but wanted some second opinions. Took it out this weekend and was running great, went through some mud holes and she went through like a champ. Last muddy patch I was climbing up out of and then 3 loud pops/bangs and no more front drive. Pulled it out with a friends truck and got back to the road. Drove home in 2wd no problem, no noises. Got the front up in the air thinking I had grenaded the front diff or axles but they seem ok. Put the TC in neutral and can turn the front shaft by hand and front tires spin, turn front tires and driveshaft spins, no noise no grinding. I'm guessing the chain has stretched or I've shredded a spline inside the TC. Found a few used ones local for $300 so probably just going to swap it out and try to rebuild this one on the bench and either sell it or keep as a spare. Anything I may have neglected to look for before I blow this all apart? Thanks

Have you lost 4X4 in all three 4WD positions? In other words, Part Time (4HI), Full Time and 4LO?

If all of them are gone then it would seem the primary chain broke - but if you have a couple of positions that work then it would seem there is a linkage problem.

Let us know - inquiring minds will be waiting :waytogo:

A local transmission shop can rebuild the one you have for close to 200 dollars or so because there is not much going on inside of our transfer cases.

It does sound like something internal broke. My suggestion would be to contract a local transmission rebuilder and see how much they would like to rebuild your transfer case.
