I am sure 'transmission fluid and filter change' questions have been asked a thousand times over here. And thanks a lot to these jeep forums for providing very helpful guides on how to DIY.
But my confusion is regarding the oil filter during the trans fluid drain process, since I could not find any threads/posts at all regarding these. I am planning on changing both the filters (the flat one & round one) on my jeep (Liberty 2002 3.7L Sport). So according to some guides, it would be helpful to let it drain overnight to get as much old fluid out as possible. And I have decided to proceed with this method.

BUT while I let it sit & drain overnight, Should I be:
1 - leaving the two old filters intact on the ****** and let it drain overnight?
2 - or take out both filters and let it drain?
3 - or take out both and replace both with new and then let it drain?
4 - or any of the above won't make a difference, with regards to as much drain as possible?

P.S. Above all conditions with the pan off?

At the moment, I have taken out only the flat filter out but left the round one in (pan is removed) and its still dripping slowly (almost 9 hours now with pan off). And then possibly change filters tomorrow and fill fluid? That is, based on any warnings/suggestions someone has regarding my above questions.

Of your choices I'd go with (2). I just pull all the filters and wait about an hour and then put it all back together. If you really want to see how much more you get, pull everything off and swap a clean pan and let it go overnight. I doubt much more will come out.

I wouldn't be so anel about waiting for every last drip to come out. There is a good amount of old dirty fluid still sitting inside the torque converter.

If you really want it cleaned, head to a dealer or place that uses ATF+4 and have it flushed.

My usual method is to drop the pan & filter, wait an hour or two, then reassemble things. If you want to let it drain overnight, leave the filter(s) off while it drains.

Could someone confirm for me, the transmission cooler line on a jeep kj 2k2 - it is the first one you get on the topmost on passenger side, going directly in/from the radiator (rubber hose with a steel clip)?

Thanks, already done. Had left the round filter in, but strange though, once I took it off the next day, more oil started draining out. So had to wait for few more hours.

Well I am pretty sure I did not wait out by my jeep all night long waiting for every single last drip to come out, unless I was sleepwalking....Yes thanks.

Not sure if you mean the connections on the ****** (see fig) or the hoses going into the radiator. The ones going to the integrated cooler on the radiator are just the two lines above the bottom rad hose on the passenger side (US models). I can't remember which one is in and which one is return (top or bottom).

Thanks, already done. Had left the round filter in, but strange though, once I took it off the next day, more oil started draining out. So had to wait for few more hours.

Yep that's why I and Belvedere recommended the removal of both filters before waiting for things to drain. But like CactusJacked said there's a ton in there yet anyway. The total capacity is like 14 quarts and with a drain and fill, like you are doing, you're only swapping about 5-6 quarts.

Like I said, if you really want it cleaned get it flushed (ATF+4 only).

All done now! I used the top hose connecting to the radiator cooler.
Shifts are very smooth. Surging/lurching gear shifts while driving is completely gone now. Thanks a lot for your suggestions!

However, there is a noise that I used to get before as well while shifting gear into Reverse or Drive from idle parked. Assumed the fluid change would have fixed this noise as well but unfortunately did not. It is like almost a static sound but louder & faster and seems to be coming from down under the jeep.
I have a bad front driveshaft CV joint which I am about to replace, which shakes easily when you do it by hands. But I am not sure if this gear shifting noise is related.

I am attaching the noise as a sound clip here. Please let me if anyone recognizes this noise and what they have done to fix it.

P.S. Two separate sound clips of the same noise

Sound clip helps alot. That's just the ****** shifting. Solenoids and servo doing their thing and such. Mine has done that since I had it (>80k). Normal.

Really?? Ok then, maybe its been there since I bought my jeep (@80k) and maybe I just haven't paid attention...lol for 5 years. Just cant be sure anymore, I feel funny now.
Anyway I am on mission to turn my libby to a completely sound-free truck eliminating them one by one, with a few upgrades along the way.
So even the slightest of noises coming out from the jeep seems like a bad one to me now.

Does it sound like a sort of ratcheting noise? My wife's Chrysler mini vans (of the past) would sound like that, as well as others I have heard. Chalked it up to "the normal sound it makes". Not trying at all to compare one model of trans to another, just sayin.

My parents Caravan does the same thing (2012 I think). My 2011 Avenger does it too. I'd swear sometimes it is louder than others but could just be the surroundings.

When I first noticed it on ours (must have had the radio turned down, lol) it made me wonder, until hearing other Chrysler's in parking lots doing the same thing. If I remember right (could be wrong), it only did it when shifting from reverse to drive, and from drive to reverse.

Mine is definitely more noticeable from D to R and vise versa but I hear it from park to either too. I was worried at first but looked it up somewhere and heard it was common.

Yes but not a metal ratchet, more of a wooden/plastic ratchet, atleast thats how it sounds to me. Did you listen to the sound clips?

Well I guess its a chrysler/jeep trademark then, unless I find A jeep out there NOT making that noise while shifting, it will be Live with it.
Or if there are any other jeep owners on this forum who havent got this noise, please do envy us with your blessing.
