I've got an '04 3.7l automatic. Sometimes it'll kick out of overdrive and into fourth. WTH? Can you help.>?

This

245/75/16 Dick Cepek Trail Country All-Terrain tires

helps cause this

Around 45-50 on the odometer. Overdrive kicks in at 40.

regear, won't do it any longer or just keep the OD off till 50 or 55
Larger / heavier tires searching for the right gear
The 04 did that plus the 03 until I did the regear's on them

I would have to agree with Tom. I didn't think to think that.

Just like the other day, I noticed my trans acting up a touch when letting off brake at idle. Would give a little knock like jump forward.

My thinking was, it's a Chrysler, trans starting to act up, so it's going to go out at some point. Well, I did the easy thing first and checked the fluid level. Was low. Added some and now all good.

I tend to the think the worst when it come to vehicles not acting correct. Had to remind myself of the simple things.

Anyway, larger tires without regear will change the final ratio and cause these issues. I don't notice it much will mine due to being used to it and now working less that 1 mile from home.

I don't know. Sounds like something I need to put on a list and take care of. What other checks do I need to perform?

I would do a few pan drops and filter swaps before doing a flush if you don't know if it's ever been done before. Maybe do 2 about a week apart. Then after a month take it in for a flush. Ease it new fluid it. Although if it acts up afterward it was already bad beforehand. Use ATF+4 only.

My work around for flushing the whole transmission was to first swap the main filter and then drive for a few days, then I used a suction pump to pump out about three quarts and put in three fresh quarts.

You see where this is going. Keep doing this until you have replenished the total capacity for your model of transmission.

I came across a youtube video once, where the guy would pump out a couple quarts every so many oil changes. He had it worked out to the point where he completely replenished the transmission fluid by the time the transmisison filter came up for a change as per mileage.

lol that video was probably mine. never had in issue with my trans doing that. now that jeep has been totaled as i got rear ended by an 18 wheeler. i now have an 03 and the trans is crap. the previous owner never changed the trans fluid or filter. drove fine until about 3 months after i bought it. now it has a hard time shifting to OD unless i manually do it. then on the downshift when i slow down it kicks hard back down to 3rd.
