So I did a transmission drain / filter change on my CRD kj last week. I changed both filters, cleaned the pan, removed the rtv and used the gasket that came with the filter kit. put everything back together and topped of the ****** with about 6 1/2 quarts of ATF+4. took it for a test drive and it's acting real funny.

The dipstick says its topped off, but it takes about 4 seconds to shift into drive from neutral, and when I come to a stop after driving fast ( like getting off the highway) it feels as though it's stuck in 5th and the engine grumbles and shudders until it completely stops then it feels as if it suddenly goes into netrual.

it's also looping at idle. i cant find anything wrong. help!

Hi,
This is an odd one...Have you considered getting the system flushed? Sounds to me as you could have a blockage. RTV and autos don't usually mix...

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
The 45RFE/545RFE really needs a trans relearn done after a drain/refill,acts funny if not done,or maybe the main sump filter came loose? Are you checking the fluid level while the trans is in "N"(it needs to be)? 6.5 qts is a awful lot for a drain/refill for a 545RFE unless you have a aftermarket deep pan.

As far a RTV sealing the pan it is the preferred way to do so now.Almost all new vehicles come that way from the factory and hurts nothing.

When it comes to the ******, I would let the dealer do it. They have the proper tools to do a flush and reset the computer so it learns your driving style all over again.

Yep.

That's what I did. Oh, and RTV is the enemy here in the auto trans industry. Too much bad installation causing too many blockages/damage. Warranty companies are getting a bit ****** about it too....gaskets please.....

Going to the dealership will net you RTV on the trans pan,no gasket since they do not even have a part # for one, only RTV.If RTV is gumming up the trans(from over use of it) then you got a filter issue,no way to get to the actual trans internals besides through that filter.

Not around here.. The DC dealers here replace RTV with gasket now. That was how i got most of my info when i posted the sticky on gaskets and filters for the 45 vs the 42. They are using a gasket in my parts.. I guess it could be dealers choice also who knows.

There is a gasket available for both the 45RFE and 42RLE.

I have the other transmission, so this is just a guess, but did your sump filter have an o-ring or seal? It almost sounds like it's sucking air. Again, not familiar with your particular trans.

Ok....now how do you do a transmission "re-learn"?

I changed my fluid and installed the gasket that came with the filters....and it squeezed out just a bit at one corner as I installed the pan.......and leaked.

I went back and used good ole' black rtv and everything is great.

The transmission shifts just fine...I just don't care for the little noise it makes as the servos shift from reverse to drive and vise versa.

If its slipping from lack of fluid it should go into limp mode(mine did).

Does the 545rfe use a rubber seal around the neck of the sump filter like the 42 rle tjkj? I can see someone leaving that seal off causing it to suck in some air.

there was a rubber O ring that came with the filter kit and it's on there. I guess the next step is to disconnect the battery and let the computer reset. now my check engine light is on too, great. I'm gonna have the dealer take a look at it since it's still under warranty. can't hurt now that it's throwing a code...

The seal for main filter is supposed to be installed separate from filter, pushed in flush with hole. just saying

the code that came up at the dealership was for the egr valve, not the transmission. i guess it's a seperate issue. the part they need for the egr valve is on backorder and they say i wont have my jeep back for at least 2 weeks! needless to say, i'm not very happy about this...

Not the same thing.
The transmission relearn is forced via a scanner, it is NOT done through disconnecting the battery

Look in the following thread...

http://jeepkj.com/forum/showthread.php?t=40498

I don't have any dealer part numbers for the gasket, most of the dealers seem to get gaskets from whatever parts source they use for non-dealer items.

However all the dealer filter part numbers are in that thread, and suggestions on make and part number for the gaskets.
