Turning off the chimes...

Im tired of hearing the seatbelt chimes.
I wear my seatbelt every time I drive,
but there are times
im only going to the mailbox.
Does anyone know how to turn them off?

If you look in the manual, it gives you a way to disable it. Very easy to do.

Try looking around page 38 or so in teh owners manual. Something about repeatedly insertign and removing the buckle from the latch mechanism. I did it on my mothers '05 and it does work.

Yeah I need to do that. I always buckle up, but sometimes it takes me a block or i take it off as im pulling in the drive. I disabled it on my superduty the same way.

I wasn't even aware that you could kill the chimes without cutting something.

Owners manuals are a wonderful thing!

And of course I always use wear my seatbelt... :-$

I was so excited when I read this, thinking you were talking about the seatbelt warning that annoys me — do people really buckle up before starting the car? Maybe I'm old-fashioned or something, but I tend to think that loud seat-belt warnings with the car still in Park are just silly. :)

Mayday! I would like to join the 'silent comunity' too, but I've got a German manual which does not give the procedure.

Could anyone reply with the required steps so that i can try if the European Liberty (it's called Cherokee over here, even so we got the Grand Cherokee as well) knows the trick too.

Yeah could someone post the instructions on how to do this. I have 2006 and I didn't see this in the book, I am going to check again when I get home tonight tho.

I snagged these instructions off another forum, but here you go.

The following steps must occur within the first 60 seconds of the ignition switch being turned to the ON or START position.

1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, and buckle the driver's seat belt.

2. Turn the ignition key to the ACCESSORY / RUN position (engine does not need to be running), and wait for the Seat Belt Warning Light to turn off.

3. Within 60 seconds of starting the vehicle, unbuckle and then re-buckle the driver's seat belt at least 3 times within 10 seconds, ending with the seat belt buckled.

4. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. A single chime will sound to signify that you have successfully completed the programming.

What you DO NOT DO!!!!!!

I also was tired of the chimes and was too stupid or lazy... most likely stupid... to check the owners manual on how to so it properly.

What I did was notice two wires going down the side of my seat belt buckle. Well applying a little common sense (with an I.Q. of 35) told me that if I cut these wires and fuse them together it will create a constant connection which will make my libby think the belt is always plugged in.

Nope.


So for about a week I was too busy to reconnect the wires, so every time I turned that puppy on I had to sit through the chiming.... which will turn off after 180 seconds... trust me it's 180 seconds exactly. But loud music will cover it up.


soldering the wires back together didn't work cause I had cut them in a way that they no longer reached each other... no no no that would be too easy. Instead I had to pinch them together. It was a lot of fun getting my wire pliers in-between the seat and the middle console... it was so much fun I recommend it for birthday parties.

Who would think an owners manual would have a useful tip other than fluid capacities and bulb #s?

Usually they are , place the key here, wear your seat belt ,use L for mud and snow or steep downhill grades kinda crap.

But this time it was use ful. Now for a poll,

Who here has truly ready their manual, even after knowing there are some good items in there? 8-[

This procedure does NOT work on a 2003 Norwegian Cherokee / Liberty 2,8 CRD Limited (diesel of course).

Nope.
Interesting that didn't work, I used a scotch lock across those two wires on my 03 Ram at the buckle and no more ding plus as an added bonus I don't have to look at the dash warning lamp when unbuckled on slow speed back roads.

Still chiming in mine (Aeh)

Let me say how this SHOULD be done:

e.g. Audi a3 -- 2005 models:

If you start this car, with no seatbelts on and only drive door open -
no chimes at all !! The car indicates that a door is open - but no ding.

You drive away - and THEN it happens something !
After half a mile and /or at a speed of about 10 km/h - the car first locks all door - then it DINGS frenetically to warn about no seat belt fastened and evt. open door if you haven¨t closed it yet.

Why should this be so difficult for Chrysler to program in my car?

I always wear my seatbelt, so I’ve got no problem wearing my seatbelt to stop the chim. I like to have the radio on and the doors open while I clean out my Liberty. I’ve heard you can stick a pencil somewhere in the door to stop the chime while the door is open. My question is where the heck is the chime coming from? I’ve looked under the dash and I’m unable to locate it. I know what it looks like I took the one off my Montero before I sold it that was easy to locate. Does anyone know where it is located?

How bout the ding when you leave the rear glass open while driving? Sometimes when I'm taking the trash down to the dumpster at my apartment I have to leave the glass up, and it dings the whole time! I know there's probably not a way to disable it, but I mean come on, it's not like I don't know that it's open ya know?
