Just finished putting the rear driveshaft back on the KJ, backed it out, took it for a ride and got back and fold this bolt laying on the ground in the garage. It's about an inch long and the head is a 12mm. Any ideas on what it's from? Only took the 4 driveshaft bolts out of the KJ, and they're all there plus this one is smaller. Skid plate bolts are there. Not 100% sure it's from the KJ even, but thought maybe someone might recognize it.

Possibly a bolt from the diff cover? Has the same type of flange but may be too long, not sure.

That happened to me when I was in high school and rebuilt the engine in my '73 Roadrunner. It had a 340 Six Pack and my dad told me to put all the nuts and bolts in separate containers by component (******, engine, etc.) because there were a lot of small linkages, nuts and bolts for the intake. Got all done putting everything back together and I had three medium size bolts sitting in a Maxwell House coffee can.

Dad: "Where do those bolts go?" I shrugged. "Good luck, boy."

When the oil pan started leaking he made me pay for the tow...

Of course it is worth an inspection to see if any bolts are missing...

Possibly your tire may have picked up a bolt from somewhere and it finally dropped on the floor..
Don't remember ever seeing a "Max" bolt anywhere ..were you driving in the desert by chance?

Looks almost like a brake caliper pin bolt...

Thought that too but I distinctly remember mine being 14mm.

I crawled under it and didn't see any bolts like it or anything missing a bolt.

12mm head, about an inch long, moderately fine thread.

Thanks for the help so far, I'm thinking it's from something else. Nothing has fallen off the KJ...yet:gr_grin:

It's the bolt that screws into the sliders on the front calipers. I just took mine apart, and thought those bolts looked familiar, then I remembered this post.

it is 9.8 not 9.0.

I came across a youtube vid of replacing the u joint of the rear drive shaft on a KJ.
The bolts had the same 9.8 max marking on it but the bolt size was not the same.

Mine has aftermarket bolts there, 14 mm head.
you know your on an forum where people wrench when you get 8 responses to guess this bolt question?

Can't be a metric graded bolt like you'd see on the KJ with the # like that. Can't see i've seen one that ever said 9.0 nor max.

8.8, 10.9 etc sure. but 9.0?

Maybe it's from the LR3 :happy175:

That's why I love hanging out here - people know what they're talking about :waytogo:

Bob
Why i'm still hanging around. You don't get that sense of community everywhere.

Even if that bolt is 9.8 and consistent with metric convention
https://www.fastenal.com/en/76/metric-system-and-specifications

9.8 = 900 MPa and 80% of 900 to yield strength;

I've still never seen one on the jeep no why they'd have spec a glorified 8.8

Last guess, what do the other bolts on your pinion yoke look like?

whatever it may be called it looks like this
cardhu-albums-other-repairs-picture3155-u-joint-flange-buggered-up-one-right-see-crack-c-clip-channel-%24110-mopar.jpg

Flange yoke, pinion yoke, The thingy the ujoint goes in on the rear of the driveshaft.

Despite the bolt size, does it have a "max" on it? I'm having jeep withdrawal and can't remember,

The above comment on the brakes does have a similar bolt on it, again, forgot sizes and don't remember a max as i replaced them years ago with a napa kit.
