I have Mobil 1 5w-30 Full Synthetic Extended Performance oil in my kj it says on the back of the container that it was good for 15,000 miles. I initially thought that was better than normal 3000 miles but I got to thinking is that the 15000 guarantee is just more convenient not really better performing. What do you guys think?

6-7K yes, 15K? no way.

Change it every 6-7K or 6 months and you'll be fine.

I would NEVER trust ANY oil inside my engine for 15000 miles.

I stick to a synthetic and 6k oil change interval and even I'd say that's pushing it. But most of my driving is highway, so..... I figure that's easier on the engine than stop and go city driving.

No oil pressure problems here.

With synthetic, I'd do 5k max. With dino now, I do about 3.5k...

Best thing to do it is run the oil for 5k then do a UOA(used oil analyst) on it. That will let you know if you can go further on that oil or not.

I wouldn't run any oil 15,000 miles. I don't care what the label on the bottle says. That is way past my comfort level anyway.

I use any name brand syn (Valvoline syn lately) and 4,000-4,500 is the max I will run it. Sometimes I change it sooner at around 3-3,500. It depends on my usage. There's no city driving around here so my driving is almost all at highway speeds.

As ridenby said..."oil is cheap-engines are expensive"

A 5 qt jug of M1 or Valvoline Syn is $22 or so at wallyworld + the cost of whatever filter you are using totals around $30 or so + your time to change it = peace of mind.....priceless........Ask Budke what a engine transplant costs.

Synthetic is better than dino oil of course. Better protection all around. Mobil's EP oil can easily do 6-7k without breaking a sweat. But again, run it for 5k and do a used oil analyst on it. That will tell you everything.

Not always and not all the time.Never break in a new engine on synthetic and synthetic gear oil is not the best in certain diffs compared to dino oils.

I have been told that before by a mechanic down the street. When I broke mine in I used dino the first couple of oil changes and then went to synthetic. But some vehicles come from the factory with synthetic so I always meant to ask about that. What do you think Troy??

There are always exceptions...Most high performance engines come with synthetic from the factory.

I run full synth and change it every 3000 miles (+/- 100). If I could convince the NDT guys at work to burn an oil sample for me (Spectrometric Oil Analysis), maybe I'd run it longer. Hell man, we don't run GE F404-100 engines for more than 100hrs or so without an oil sample and oil change and that's on a full synth PAO based oil. Not that my KJ is a rocket ship but I won't run the risk of damaging my KJ's heart just to save a few bucks. Like ridenby says, oil is sooo much more less expensive than parts.

I'm absolutely certain that those High-perf engines are "broken in" before they leave the facility. Heck man, your KJ's engine was tested (QA'd) before it went into your Jeep and then run again before it was shipped to wherever you bought it.

Like ptsb5a stated those engines are broken in on a dyno before installed in the vehicle and filled with synthetic.High performance engines after the initial tune will be broken in with the tried and true 20min dyno break-in,final tuned then put in the vehicle, not a good break-in procedure for a engine that you want to last like a DD vehicle over 5+years.

I change my KJ synthetic oil every 3,500 miles or sooner depending on oil in the am.
After Kj sits overnight, I pull the dip stick and if it is looking brown or thick on the bottom of the stick, then it is time to change it. If it is a clean burning motor you will know.
My Chevy even with Mobil1 gets dirty quickly, just changed it out at 1800 miles as it was gross on the bottom. With new oil could tell the difference right away, and less chance for sludge if the oil & filter is kept clean.
