Got a 06 jeep liberty limited with a auto transmission and am looking at ordering a torque converter for it but it seems there are 2 different transmissions. I think it's the 42rle. Not sure though. Any way to tell?

Yup, 42RLE like HJ said.

If you get a "build sheet" for your jeep it will tell you everything that was on your Jeep when it left the factory. It might help you with stuff.

P0740 code.

Get out on the highway at 55+ and cruise for a minute. Keep your foot on the gas and tap the brake pedal, TC should unlock (if it was locked) and RPMS should shoot up a few hundred. Mine when the TC was failing still passed this test, but if nothing happens then it's definitely shot.

Mine is giving me locking and unlocking issues between 30 and 45 mph. And it's worse when pulling a hill at low rpms. Give it some gas to down shift and the issue goes away. Took it to a transmission shop who I trust very much. He hooked his snap on computer up to it and drove for about 20 mins and came back and said that the torque converter was on the down hill slide. He quoted me $800 to change it out. I can't pay that when it's something that I can do. I just hope he is right.

Is there clutch material in the trans fluid? When mine went it started clogging up everything. And the reverse clutch was going out too.
