Whine sound while driving

Lately I've been hearing a whining noise coming from the front passenger side while driving It's gotten louder now and if its drivetrain its gotta get fixed. It starts at about 40 then gets louder with speed BUT it only whines/howls when I'm driving a steadyish speed. When I take my foot off the pedal or give more gas it stops. I've looked it up on here and Google and I keep hearing bearings, u joints, or cv boot torn. It doesn't constantly make noise so its not bearings, it doesn't vibrate so no u joints, and I checked underneath and the boot looked alright. Anyone got an idea before I go to a mechanic or worse the stealership?

Maybe something having to do with airflow? A piece out of whack or something causing the aerodynamics to make the noise.

The CV boot doesn't have to be torn for the CV to be bad. Grab hold of the half axle on the passenger side and give it a good tug back and forth. A little play may be OK, but if there is considerable play at one end or the other you have a bad CV joint. Seems like the CV's on the Liberty don't click like other vehicles when they go bad. If it is the CV and you have to replace the half axle, I would recommend that you replace the intermediate shaft as well.

What kind of whine? Maybe there's a bad bearing in your alternator?

A "whine" is pretty broad... could be any of the things we have said, or something completely else. (dunno)

When I read/hear "intermediate shaft" I think of the front driveshaft coming from the transfer case, connecting to the front diff and then driving the wheels via the front differential.

Do I have that right? I'm very mechanically inclined, do all my own work on the Liberty but I've never seen so many different terms for the same components in a drivetrain. Is it a "Jeep thing" or what...? :shrug:

I don't know how to explain it well sorry but is say it sounds mechanical but sort of like a semi while driving down the freeway. I know its not air pressure because its been getting louder and on one side.

what you can see in the front are the half shafts. Not many call them that here though. Usually all say cv axle or something or just CV when being short. On the passenger side between the half shaft and the differential is an intermediate shaft which connects the actual differential to the half shaft.

The front driveshaft from the transfer case to the front diff is actually called a Shaft-Propeller in the service manual. That's probably where prop-shaft comes from. Here its usually just called the front drive-shaft.

My Jeep was doing the same thing from the front passanger @ 40mph and up. I thought it was bad bearing but my tires are also low on tread (35K on orginal tires). I also haven't rotated them in a Long time since my tires are at the end of there life cycle. So I decided to rotate my tires and noise gone. I put my spare into the mix and the tire in question on the tail gate.



So you should consider trying that. If you (or a friend) have the tools to do your own rotation then you got nothing to loose. Plus it would give yourself a chance to inspect the front end.

Thanks RM - that's what I thought. But reading through drivetrain-related posts the different terms made me wonder if there are parts under my Jeep I hadn't discovered yet...
