White smoke from tailpipe, low compression in 2 cylinders

Hey Guys and gals, I have an 04 liberty 3.7. Just rolled over 210k. Had the typical valve cover gasket oil leak back around 150k and got that taken care of (after a few failed attempts). Then not too long after I started to smell antifreeze burning out the tailpipe and was having to refill reservoir every week or so. I decided to try some liquid glass and it didn’t seem to be working for a while, instead now I was left with the throat tingling sensation of burnt glass and antifreeze smoke every day. Eventually when I was about to give up hope, it finally started to coagulate and do its job. I no longer had to add antifreeze as frequently and the radiator cap was finally hissing when I would unscrew it hot. The smell never fully went away but it was a lot better then before. I added some oil a week ago as I noticed it was pretty low and all of a sudden it’s burning oil... bad. Way too much white smoke pouring out the tailpipe. I should have mentioned, at no point have I ever had oil in my coolant or coolant in my oil. That’s the part that baffles me. I did a compression test about a month ago and 4 cylinders had about 160 and 2 only had 60. So with that all said I will let you guys run with some ideas. I’m ready to take on my first head gasket this weekend if the consensus thinks it will fix it. Is it too little too late?

Sounds like you need a new head gasket at least, with the miles I'd replace head too

I would pull the heads and check out the entire engine. I would say that it may be better to do a rebuild or a replacement due to coolant being introduced into the engines. Coolant and bearings do not go well together at all. Based on what you said you may even have a cracked head. I may be cheapest to just get a good junk yard engines and call it a day. Look on car-part.com for engines to swap into your libby.

Having to refill reservoir every week or so and added some oil too. That is one of the signs to begin rebuild or replace the engine. It happened to me in august of last year, I was on the road on my way home and I came to stop on a traffic light and when the light change I accelerated to continue on the road my rig start to shake too much, I need to pull over and stop. I was worry what could it be I had to tow and take it to the mechanic and when he turn on my rig a lot of white smoke came from the muffler, he look at me and say is mixing water, you are without coolant on the reservoir, I say what! Can not be! I check the reservoir every week. He begins started doing a compression test and cylinder #2 it was not compressing. I was totally pissed off, he wanted to prove me visually, so he took some kind of a tool with a camera and insert it on cylinder #2 I could see that piston was not compressing.

At the end I make the decision telling my mechanic to rebuild the engine of my jeep. Then hurricanes Irma and Maria came, the entire emergency situation declared throughout the island of Puerto Rico They were very frustrating moments without having my rig in the moments that I needed her the most. I was without my jeep Liberty for 3 months. Thank God we are getting up and rebuilding, we still have a lot to do.

Actually you can find an engine fresh rebuild, you give them your Vin # and $2500 and they send you the engine. They want the old one as a core, not sure what it would cost to ship the core back but shipping from them is free. They're on eBay, don't remember the company name but it comes with a 5 year unlimited mile warranty.

Hi Samsolo49 I have already rebuilt my jeep's engine. I cost 3,500.

Before I used regular oil, now I use synthetic 10w-30.

Once my brother who has a Grand Cherokee WJ, I asked him what kind of oil he used and he told me that he used AMSOIL OE 5W-30 and when I told him that I used Mobil 1 synthetic 10W-30, he asked me why and I found out on the internet that for my jeep model I should use 5W-30 just like him. We started debating and he got the manual of my jeep liberty online and he showed me a detail that call my attention and said as follows. Use 5W-30 regardless of the temperature change. I told him to let me find you the manual that I have of my jeep liberty and it showed that I kept no less than 5W-30 and no more than 10W-30.
