So I have an 02 Jeep Liberty Limited, 148,000 miles auto ******. The other day I was driving along pulled over to get gas got back in and drove away and the jeep would not get past 20 MPH once it would just rev up like it was neutral past 20 MPH when you dropped it down to second it would get up to 40 MPH but that's it. Limped home ran the codes it said incorrect gear ration 3 and incorrect gear ratio 4. Any ideas what's going on, and how much would it cost to fix it? Or should I scrap it? (JK I love that Jeep)

Obviously , something happened with the transmission or related sensors to put the transmission in limp mode . The first thing I would try is clearing the codes & see if they come right back . Possible hiccup if transmission was working properly till this happened . I research & work on mine myself so if problem persisted I would probably move on to input & output sensors , etc if problem persisted . Sometimes it's necessary to have a proper diagnosis done by a reputable transmission shop .
If you decide to scrap it , I might be interested in buying it if you're not too far . I'm near Parkersburg , WV which is right on the Ohio river .
Is the transmission fluid clean & full to the full mark ? Has the transmission been serviced regularly , fluid & filter ?

when's the last time it was serviced, if ever?
sounds like the accumulator, 45RFE 545RFE and 68RFE have a 2-3 neutral and drainback issues that there's a transgo kit to deal with

weak point in the transmission is the accumulator cover, its possible if you just chucked the accumulator cover replacing it with the transgo kit will resolve the problem

and it may go splat after you replace the cover with the kit, but its 100 bucks for the kit versus not even trying the kit and just forking 1000-2500 for a rebuild

in my experience , specifically with the 45 and 545 its a little better than 50/50 that replacing the plate will take care of it and it wont make another peep

Thanks for the info, iv'e only the jeep for about a year or so and I don't drive it much more of a winter warrior vehicle for me. The transmission fluid looks ok but as as far as I know it has not been serviced. I think my next step will be taking it to a transmission shop and having it diagnosed. I am somewhat good with working on them but that stuff is way over my head. Also you are close to me in parkersburg I am only a hop from Huntington, WV but I really would like to keep it if I do scrap it what could I even get for it?

drop pan
6 bolts drop the valve body
then theres 7 or so accumulator plate bolts

to install the pump accumulator springs (which are in the kit as well) which arent likely to be associated with your issue, the transmission has to actually come out but the accumulator plate itself is probably in your grasp, accumulator plate job the trans actually gets to stay in. you MIGHT actually be able to talk them into doing it for you for an extra hours labor ontop of a transmission fluid and filter change which would have to be done anyway, or you could do it yourself

just messy more than anything

let us know what the shop says

this dude does a fairly good job of explaining the kit

If you don't feel comfortable doing the above, I think paying a shop $80 to diagnose it is well worth it, that's what I did after throwing parts at mine for a year.

Thanks for all the great responses everyone! I think I will try to do the transgo kit and see if it fixes it. I will report back when I know more.

Quick Question though, when I get underneath it to work on it will it be ok just to set it up on ramps? Or should I jack up the front end?

I don't think it would make a difference, as long as you set the ebrake or chock the wheels.

Well after spending the whole day I manged to take the transmission apart and the plate was bent out and the one the springs was in the transmission pan. So I fixed it and put it back together. However, now it won't shift into any gears!!!!! It starts and runs but won't go into gear at all. At this point I am think I am done. It is a backup to a backup car so I believe I will be selling it to someone cheap! So if anyone is interested let me know, I am located in southern Ohio only 30 minutes away from Huntington WV

Thanks

I'll post some pictures tonight when I get home from work. However, the condition is it current starts and runs great, no oil leaks. It looks good on the outside no rust no dents it is red in color. It has a leather interior with a sunroof it has new tires on the front decent on the back alloy wheels. I'm not sure what a fair price in its current shape would be but I would like to try to get as close to $1800 as possible. But I'm open to reasonable offers.

How did you "fix" it? Did you install the previously mentioned Transgo plate kit? If all you did was straighten the original plate, and screwed it back on, then having a problem again is understandable and to be expected.

I ordered the kit and installed a new plate and the new springs and the new gaskets. I assume it is something in the computer or it is something that I have messed up. At this point I am just tired of fooling with it.
