My son works for Advance and says Dorman often includes the gasket...he's checking to see if by chance they include the shield. Its $85 thru them but if it includes the shield/gasket and is of better metal....he's checking into it for me.

So I understand to replace the intermediate shaft if the splines are worn, and maybe the half-shaft too if the splines are worn. But what of the intermediate shaft housing and bearings? I'm not thrilled about replacing the one in the diff, but is there a bearing to consider...

Am I understanding right in that I can take out one or both half-shafts for diagnostic purposes and not lose diff oil?
Can I take out 1 side and drive a short distance? Or does it cause spider gears to spin and diff to go crazy?

She seems to make sharp turns fine. No binding so its not in part-time mode.
I'd hate to wait for it to go bad to be sure but only to find out its in the diff. Hmmmm.
