Howdy.

I've got the dreaded oil pan rot and am planning on the replacement.

Is there a better quality oil pan? What are we buying now? Plastic? Galvanized??? Thicker mil metal?

I'd hate to repeat a factory mistake by using an OEM pan. This pan is like a parachute. I aint using a poorly made one twice.

Thanks...

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
OEM is the only one you can buy unless you have a custom one made.

Nothing wrong with the OEM pan, over 12 years here and not a single spot of rust.Granted I do actually wash my vehicle and wash it more often in the winter months(the under carriage that is).

Rock Auto also lists a Dorman oil pan for 07 KJ at $65...not sure on quality compared to OEM though.
I keep painting mine and keep it clean as much as possible in winter.
I leaned that from TjKj ! Replacing the pan is a big deal too!

Why in the :favorites68: I didn't replace my oil pan with a new one when I swapped engines is a perpetual mystery to me. What was I thinking - or what was I NOT thinking...??? :shakehead: The pan is a royal pain to replace.

I confound myself sometimes

Dont be so ******* yourself Bob. Look at the bright side, if it is not leaking at all or completely rusted through... it is a good thing!
If it was not a new/rebuilt engine, I know I would have wanted to at least remove the old pan have a peak/clean inside and would have installed a new gasket/pan while there for fun! All u can do now is keep it clean/a quick coat of paint spring & fall is what I do. I never want salt in winter to attack the oil pan..too many threads of poor maintenance and look, a hole in my pan stories!
So I would not worry about the pan for now just enjoy your KJ and drive.gif in style! (Cheers)

Dang I'm over 50 oil changes and not even at 94k!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I'm a slacker on the oil changes I guess, could of sworn it was more than that, may have to recount today and make sure. Just ran the list quickly last night to see how many it was so I could post. When I wake up today I'll recount!!:happy175::happy175:

on here
They use so much salt on the roads here it is ridiculous. After every storm I power spray underneath as good as I can.

Normally when I change the oil I put a rag under the oil filter then wipe the oily rag all around the oil pan after I put the bolt back in the pan.

Still, I just found a spot starting. I need to drop the skids and take care of it.

I do the same with washing it and wiping it down with oil. I also wipe the oil off sometimes and paint it, then back to the oil. Mine is fine so far.

My son works for Advance and says Dorman often includes the gasket...he's checking to see if by chance they include the shield. Its $85 thru them but if it includes the shield/gasket and is of better metal....he's checking into it for me.

And thanks for the replies guys.

What's this "issue" thats apparently a problem with our oil pans? Are they more prone to rust than other vehicles or something?

The main problem is that Jeeps are used in the salt belts and for what ever reason the bottom corner gets splashed easily with salt.
Unless you wash the undercarriage/pan, you are asking for trouble over the years.
The heat from the pan also dries the salt instantly my guess..big build ups where you don't want it.

Woh hold on there- how to slide a new pan around on KJ Video.
On a 4x4 it's Remove skid plate -Drain engine oil- Remove engine to transmission structural cover- Remove transmission oil cooler line bracket- Remove the front axle assembly from the vehicle-Loosen both engine mount through bolts- Lower the vehicle- Raise the engine using Engine Support Fixture-Raise the vehicle-Remove the oil pan bolts-Separate the oil pan from the engine- Remove the (2) nuts and (1) bolt holding the oil pump pick-up tube, and windage tray in place etc etc...+++
