:help:
Howdy, everybody. I just found these forums, and I'm hoping some of you can help me with my issue on my '06 Jeep Liberty. Please forgive the long narrative, but I think it's best I give as many details as I can since I'm asking for help...

My Liberty is dying when I'm either sitting at a stop light or when I'm slowing down rapidly to turn a corner. This problem had happened twice before (a few years ago and in January) both times after the battery was either replaced or disconnected to do work on it. The other two times, the mechanics said they adjusted the throttle (which after some research I think means they tightened the stop set screw a bit) and it didn't happen again.

Two weeks ago I got a bunch of work done including replacing leaking gaskets for the front main seal, transmission, and rear differential and replacing the oil pan. At 248,000 miles, I didn't bat an eye at doing the work, but now it's having the old issues again. When it happens, the RPMs just suddenly drop below 500 (idle normally hangs right at about 600) and it dies as soon as it drops between 300-400 RPMs. When it drops, it is a sudden drop and dies instantly. There's no running rough before hand to warn me, and it runs fine if I've got my foot on the gas. It does always start back up, though.

I adjusted the throttle stop set screw myself to see if that would work this time and it didn't die again, but it acted like it wanted to die on me. The weird thing is that it doesn't happen in park and if I'm idling in drive and I suddenly cut the air conditioner off, I can watch the RPMs drop from 600 to 400 and runs rough but doesn't die and it takes it about 30 seconds to recover and go back up to the normal 600 RPMs it idles at.

They've replaced the throttle position sensor and the IAC and it didn't happen, but then I had issues with my check engine light coming on when I was driving down the highway and the code it threw was a low voltage code. And it did die on me when I was gunning it to get back on the highway and the idiot lights never went off. The mechanic recalibrated the throttle and then that issue didn't happen again, but now I'm back to it dying at stop lights.
So now they want to replace the entire throttle body to the tune of about $400. I'm all for replacing it if it will fix it, but it just feels to me like maybe there's something going on with something electrical or a computer chip or something that might adjust the settings when the power is disconnected…?

I have read some of the boards that reference this type of problems in Jeep Libertys, but they're from 2008 and none of the vehicles were high mileage, so if anyone has any experience with issues like this, please let me know what you did to fix it. I love my Jeep and really don’t want to have to replace her.

Thanks!

I would have suggested the IAC- had the same problem with a Mustang GT I used to own and that was the issue.

Instead of getting a brand new throttle body, I would go to a salvage yard and get a used one for a lot less than that. I got a used 4.7L throttle body for about $50.

If there is a computer issue, you could have the local dealer (or another shop with the right equipment) reflash your PCM back to stock. My local Jeep dealer does it for $100 and it takes about an hour (or so I was told).

IAC would be my thought as well.. expect for pretty sure you have drive by wire and don't have an IAC.....

Not positive but I thought the drive by wire just integrated the TPS into the TB for the 07s? I think we all have an IAC. Rock auto lists an IAC for the 06 and 07 not that they are always right.
