Bashgod - I agree, I don't beat on mine enough to make a difference (at least I hope not!)

Dave - I know what you mean - it takes some forward or rearward movement of the vehicle for it to engage, so I am sure that before it's even engaged in 4PT I already have it selected for 4FT. It's most likely a negligible effect, but it still doesn't make sense to me.

hey guys.... was just wondering this question myself and searched and here it is...

here's my question... say you put it in 4ft or 4pt and you drive 20 feet or so and you hear BANG... and you can feel it...like its slaming into gear or something... does anyone else get that?

Ok here is one form the new guy again. My KJ is a Sport with the 231 t case and a 3.7 V6. I live in Utah, up in the mouintains and I have to drive down a pretty nasty canyon very early in the morning. I could use the Full Time 4X4. I want to do a swap (found a good price on a used 242 unit), but I have a manual transmission. Is this a good idea or has anybody done this swap?

Yes, I did the swap, and I find it worthwhile. I'd say, if you frequently find yourself in situations where you'd like to have 4wd on, but the physics of part-time keep you from being able to do so, then the swap is worth it.

Here is the link to my write-up.

Just be sure that the 242 is from a KJ.

How will it work with the Manual transmission? I am also considering finding one of the newer 6 speed trannys too.

I've heard a manual will cause the 242 to bind, I have no idea why that would be the case, but I also have no experience with it working either.
