Hi,

I need a new serpentine belt/fan belt/Drive belt. Did a search, found little ref belts.

Napa says they have 2 options, a 6 point w/AC and a 7 Point w/AC
Am I correct in assuming that "point" means "rib"
so a 6 or 7 rib belt?
I don't want them to order the wrong belt.
I have a 04 w/ 2.4L. Currently has a 6 rib belt on it.
Thanks,

Hi Kckj,
Not to throw you off the scent, but I replaced the serpentine belt on my 2.4 a couple of years ago and the new (mopar) belt was shorter as they had problems with the longer belts 'chirping'. The newer shorter belt does not use one of the idler pulleys, hence only going round 6 pulleys and not 7 like the original. The pulleys being crank, tensioner, a/c, idler, alternator and power steering pulleys. Maybe these are the 'points' they mean???????? Just something to consider. Or you may be right about the ribs? Hope this helps. Cheers, Steve

thanks yellowcoyote and Banditsteve,

Banditsteve, what you say makes sense. I guess. I'll have to wait until morning to check out the setup. I'm thinking off pic in my head and i am thinking there are 3 idlers. 1 being the tensioner. i wonder which of the other 2 they eliminate. ill take your pulley list out and count them off.

Thanks again
KC

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
The difference is not in how many ribs the belt has,it is referring to how many points it has to go around so if you have AC you need the 7 belt and if you do not have AC you need the 6 point belt.

Not wanting to overrule anybody here but mine has a/c as well and the Jeep dealership said that it was a factory modification to use the shorter belt and ignore one of the idler pulleys. It actually said to remove the pulley altogether but I have left it in situ as I carry the old belt for emergencies. I understand what you are aying Tjkj cos obviously if there was no a/c compressor it would be 6 points. I will take a photo sometime and see if that helps. Hope you got sorted out Kckj. Cheers, Steve :D

See Pics................. Sorry for the crap photos but took them with my phone. Obviously one is the revised routing of the belt and the other is from the sticker under the bonnet (hood) From the original routing. Hope this makes sense. Cheers, Steve :D

Thanks to all, and bandit steve for the photo. That was a big help. There was a service bulletine released ref. chirping belts, I just wasn't aware of it.

I went with the 6 point shorter belt.

I too left the old pulley on there and put the old belt in the jeep as a just in case. Noted too that that the 2 idler pulleys are the same part/# so when 1 goes bad, boop, just switch it out.

It's always nice to be able to ask these ?'s here and get help. Much appreciated.
Thanks again.
