Has anyone gone thru the trouble to wire on of these up? Either with or without a remote starter.

I am having trouble on the DEI 562T that I installed. Door locks not currently working. The KJ utilizes two resistances to trigger lock or unlock on the single door wire. One is 470 Ohm, the other 1500 Ohm (IIRC). I am not exact, but within 10%. No luck. I may get a potentiometer and dial it in perfectly and give it another go.

If you go aftermarket, you'll need either an extra learning module (like a DEI 456L), which I couldn't get to to work...or wire up relays to get it to work (usually the "brain" uses two wires...on lock one is neg, the other positive, then reverse them on unlock). For the KJ, you need neg only, so a relay is required to switch polarity.

the12volt.com is a great resource!!

This is the kind of response I was looking for. I've been researching the heck out the systems used in the KJ.

From what I've seen there a few different modules I could use, but I don't really care for any of them, the 456lw, xk531, or the xk03. All by DEI.

The one thing I didn't like about the 456lw was that in some instances you'll need to cut the door lock/unlock wire in half if it doesn't learn the signal.

At this point I'm considering going the relay route. I just hate the thought of have one relay and resister for every stinking option I want to hook up.

My other option would be to see if I could find a different remote car starter with onboard relays built into it. At least that way it would just be a matter of installing the resistors.

I can't help but think that this would be so much easier if companies such as DEI would just make a remote/key fob that could learn the signal from a factory key fob.

I used to have an old TV remote that could do that. You would point them end to end and one remote would actually learn the other remote. But then again, those work on a different principle I believe.

I fully agree. I tried both ways (cut and uncut) with the 456L and it won't learn it. I hooked up resistors (like I said before, within +/- 10%) and tried to make it learn off that, no luck. I also tried relays w/resistors...no luck.

Last resort is that poteniometer idea. I am going to dial that in perfectly, and then use it to try and train the 456L.

Really, head over to the12volt.com's forums. Many professional installers on there, without them the starter would not be working in the KJ.

I don't think onboard relays would work. Still, you'll be throwing a "+" signal on lock or unlock, that's no good. The relays basically just filter out the "+" signal while the "-" goes right on through.

Ugh.

From what I've been told I would still need another relay and reisistor to disable the factory alarm system along with the MDLR-1 above.

It looks like I'm going to have to use something like the xk531 if I want to use the keyless entry feature on my remote car starter.

Ha, your timing is amazing. I have wrapped up my landscaping projects around the house and was planning on getting back to it this weekend. I am hoping to run to radio shack one night this week and see if they have something I can use to vary resistance.

I can't comment on the factory alarm since I don't have one.

My remote start is working beautifully, I'd just like to get the door locks working. Once those are functional, I want to put the AUX channel on the fob to trip the rear glass, and I want to hook up the rear defroster to run when the RS is used. #1 priority is getting the locks to work. I'll update this weekend with my progress.

FYI, you can build the setup you'd need out of a couple of relays, few resistors, and some wire. No need to buy a prebuilt unit. I am most definitely not an electronics guy and I had it working - just can't seem to get the correct resistance for the BCM to unlock the doors.

I installed a AstroStart remote starter that has keyless entry(and rear glass open) on my '02 KJ.Was a breeze but I have no OEM alarm either, nothing fancy was needed except a extra relay to make the rear glass open.Granted I already have the OEM keyless entry, but haven't used my OEM keyfobs in over 6 years.

I was looking at the Astrostarts, but decided against it due to cost.

The remote starter I have is made by DEI (formerly Design Tech). I paid under $50 for it and installed it myself.

What is sentinal mode?

Is that where you can leave the vehicle running(without keys) while you run into the store or something?

You can leave it running, just a push of a button and remove key, will stay running up to 18min(depending on how long you have it set).

Ther sentinal mode is a prgrammed temp(you can set) that the remote starter computer will start your vehicle for a set run time(up to 18 min),then it checks the temp again(internal car temp) in 2 hours. If the temp droppd back to or below the pre-set temp it starts it back up again.Always keeping your vehicle nice and toasty.

I've had mine for over 6 years and it was worth every penny and then some in my opinion.

You get what you pay for applies here also.

I think you're right.

I went with the DEI because I've owned four or five of them and they're pretty simple to wire up. Next time I'm going to go with something a little better.
