I know it used to be said it would cause oil leaks on higher mileage engines that have been run on dyno oil because of the smaller molecules or something. I've also heard more oil burning can happen. But the oil is still far superior.

I'm thinking of switching over to synthetic on my '02 3.7 with 179000. I just don't want to end up with any leaks or anything since there are no leaks now.

Some older vehicles yes some had issues it seemed, newer ones no, no issues unless of course you already have a leak
Full syn in all of mine, on my 04 for the last 220,000 miles

X3 You should not experience any leaks when switching to quality Full Synthetic engine oils.
The superior cleaning properties & cold flowing characteristics of synthetics make this the best choice today to protect & clean your valued engines.
Back in 2008 when I purchased the Jeep, it had been run on dino oil only.
I immediately drained the dino and switched to synthetics.
I noticed by about the 2200 mile mark the synthetic was now cleaning well & the oil was getting dirty.
So I dropped the oil & filter at 2200 miles, and from there forward normal interval oil changes. I use a quality Mobil1 filter.

Only one I ever knew of personally was a customers 95? F150 with a 302. He put Amzoil in and couldn't keep it full. Switched back to old yeller bottle Penzoil and oil use stopped. That one left me skeptical for years of synthetics. Now? 180K miles, I'd continue with whatever it's had in the past. It ain't gonna make a new one out of it, why spend more money?

New engine, or new vehicle, I'd likely give synthetic a try.

No leaks. Mobil 1 full synthetic. But I have a new engine with 3000 miles that had this from the start besides the break in oil.

I think basically any engine done after 2000 is fine for using full synths, older engines no but I have ran across a couple cases of newer engines rejecting full synth and burning through it like water. One was over 100k miles one was under 100k miles. I personally think its a gamble, I run Pennz Ultra Platinum and haven't had any issues and that includes the qt of Lucas Oil Stabilizer. Other than I know I still am combating minor sludge issues that I think is almost done and what's left is to find the exhaust leaks and fix those that make themselves well known on cold winter mornings.

I run Mobil 1 full syn and filters in my 99 Silverado and 04 Libby without any issues of leaks or burning. The 99 has been full syn since the 1st oil change after purchasing in March 99, 1st and only new vehicle I've owned.

Must be a Ford thing. I ran Royal Purple in my 98 4L OHV Ranger for a while and with a 4-5k OCI I'd always be down almost a quart. Went back to the "whatever was on sale" oils and the loss stopped.

I have seen engines use some oil when switching to syn, but then the usage will taper off over time. I have no explanation for it, but have seen it happen.

You can dump a batch of my personal home made coffee into a GM 350 for motor oil substitute and it won't burn off. Its the only GM engine I give credit for being built to take punishment.

Switched my 2005 KJ to synthetic at 125K miles. No issues after 2 more changes and 10K miles later.

I had a bit of usage with 5w-20 synth, now on 5-30and it seems fine, the usage may have been on account of first time synth or from weight. Not to concerned, gona run synth through summer and try 5-20 again next winter if it seems a cold one, will update on usage second time around with light weight if the discussion is stilk going

I've got an '03 with about 133K on it. I put in Mobil 1 EP at around 125K and ever since it has been burning oil. Before that I was using castrol dino with no burning at all. I'm going through about 1-2 qts an OCI (around 2200 for me since I don't but many miles on it).

That seems like alot, is it possible the synthetic removed some gunk sealing something?

Switched to Synthetic last spring. Never have had to add a drop. I seem to recall that on much older vehicles the seals had problems with synthetic but that that is not true for anything made in this century.

No external leaks whatsoever. I might do an experiment and switch back to dino for my next OCI to see if the usage continues

Better idea to stick with what you use IMO

I use mobil 1 esp 5w-30. Oil consumption is proportional to fuel consumption(I mean a lot. I keep a 4 liter oil box in trunk). It makes me anxious. Next week I will change PCV. I hope consumption will decrease.
