Actually not really true, one way it can be done,no real right way or wrong way.
The actual purpose of sucking it in through a vacuum line is not to clean the carbon on the valves since any injector cleaner added to the gas tank does this, but to actually clean the carbon that builds up in the actual intake itself.Since multi port injection came around we now have what is called a "dry" intake, that means no fuel travels through the intake, only air. This leads to some serous carbon issues that build up after the engine is shut off. This problem does not occur in vehicles with carbs or TBI injection since they use a "wet" intake were actual gas will travel through the intake along with the air.
The best way to inject SeaFoam through a vacuum hose is with one of these(scroll to the bottom of the page)..............

and use the whole can while the engine is running and keep it running till the smoke clears out of the tail pipe, keeping the engine rpm's at about 1500-2000 after the cleaner is totally injected will help clear the smoke faster.
