BEEP! BEEEEEP! Horn keeps going off! Any ideas?

I have a 2004 Jeep Liberty Limited. I have only had a few problems:
1. Familiar ball-joint problem (twice)
2. Leaky passenger window, due to improperly installed rubber strip (fixed myself)

But the other day, my horn started going off, intermittently, for an hour. I thought it was the alarm, but it was not flashing the lights and it was like: beep, pause, beep beep, long pause, beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep, long pause, b-, b-, pause, beep, beep. Just like it went crazy!

I tried pushing the buttons on the key fob, opened the car, locked, unlocked it, started it, nothing. The horn keep going off.

Finally, I just pulled the connectors off of the two horns.

Now, I have no horn. I thought it was the horn relay, but it looks like the Liberty has no horn relay!

Any ideas?

Hmm... Yeah plug the horn in and see if its still doing it, then pull apart fob while its going whacko and remove the battery from the fob, does it stop??

Even with a relay i can't see a bad relay doing that sitting still.

Unless it is some alien relay, it should fail to where the horn does not work. Worst case is it would fail in a manner that the horn would be on constantly, not intermittent. There has got to be a short or bad contact somewhere. I wouldn't have thought about the fob, as good of a place as any to start I guess.

Does it honk normally if you push on the horn intermittently or hold down on the horn control?

There is a relay. Usually though as said relays fail either open or closed - off or on. Something may be wrong with the switch too. You should hear the relay click when you press the horn button.

substitute another relay temporarily to rule out the relay. Look in the manual to find it.

It could actually be your battery dying. I know, I know, it sounds crazy. BUT... A friend of mine had this happen in his Dakota. About 2 days before his battery totally died, his horn was blowing like that. And more recently, when I had a battery die, my locks and dash lights went ******* *******. On, off, on, off, on, off!

I almost called my uncle the priest for an exorcism.

Really?? Interesting... I guess with this cold weather here i could get condensation in the steering wheel.. I don't know the OP's situation weather wise but never thought about that.

I had a horn problem on my S10 i used to have, it was crazy, in the middle of the night the horn starts blowing. The weather got so cold that the rubberized center of the steering wheel must have contracted enough to press the worn contacts together, i pulled out the center of the steering wheel and let it hang till morning, after the truck was warmed up i put it back together and then it wouldnt do it. Got cold the next night and same thing... Ending up pulling the relay for the winter... LOL

If you have a lightbar or any other penetration through the roof,check it out.
This weekend at a run in Florida,my lightbar was leaking water in and down the side rail right into my fusebox.Horn was going off and wouldn't stop.
Had to pull the connector out of the horn also to shut it up.
Check fuse box in side panel of door for moisture.
Guessing the water closed the relay till it dried out of there.

This will help you identify the relay (credit to someone else for this nice photo).

Switch it with another one to eliminate the possibility of relay fault.

Horn going off bloooowing

My Horn blowing problem was from a water leak from door seal blew out the fuse block blew the hair dryer on it for a while unbolted the fuse block and ran plastic over the top so water could not enter again
The truck also would not shut right down till the fuel pressure got low. and cooling fan ran all the time engine was running and some times the lights stayed on also.
Hope this helps someone, I searched the net but couldn't find any help

check yer battery voltage. my horn just starting going off for no reason. put new battery in, horn stopped.
