Canadian gas tank/trailer hitch recall - N46

Got my recall notice.... Already have a hitch from new. Kinda rotted out now so I wonder if they'll replace it.
About the wiring and ball..... When I purchased the KS initially, I worked a towing package into to the deal. When I went to pick it up there was just a hitch body. They tried to tell me that a "package" didn't include those. I told them then they could cancel the deal. I got the wiring and receiver.
I could swear that in previous recalls, liken the LBJs, that if you had already replaced the parts yourself, Jeep would just reimburse you for the cost as long as you had receipts. But the recall notice used to state that. The hitch notice doesn't have that language in it.

Does anyone have experience with this recall? Will they reimburse you for the cost of the hitch if you already have one?

They will not reimburse you, They will inspect your existing trailer hitch and make sure its up to their standards and send you home.

UK Recall

Just to update you - here in the \UK we are given two choices if we have a towbar already on the vehicle:

1. either have the towbar removed and a crossbeam fitted (not a tow hitch bar) meaning we are never allowed to tow again, or

2. sign a waiver stating we do not wish to have our existing towbar removed - this waiver then renders our cars as uninsurable.

It has since been discovered that despite our cars having a tow capability rating on our registration documents that NO towbar has ever been approved in the UK for towing by JEEP. They are claiming that the towbar is an 'aftermarket' addition (even those fitted by Jeep Dealerships from the JEEP catalogue before accepting delivery as a new vehicle).

We will receive no compensation, the value of these cars has plummeted and Customer Service is totally useless.

However, here is one light at the end of the tunnel, a towbar company has manufactured a towbar that complies with the new regulations - but we will have to pay for it ourselves.:thumbsdown:

To answer your questions:

The government will do absolutely nothing - it's a 'safety recall'
FIAT will do absolutely nothing - it's a 'safety recall' - the towbars are considered an aftermarket item so not their responsibility

Basically we in the UK have been screwed over - to give you an example - before the recall my 2005 KJ was valued at £4,500 - without the towbar after the recall - trade in/scrap value of £475 - and I would have to pay to have it scrapped. To be honest who would buy a diesel guzzler that does 20mpg with diesel costing £1.20 a litre (£5.34 a gallon) here unless they needed it for towing.

We are battling with FIAT to either pay us compensation or at least pay for the towbar that has been manufactured to enable us to be able to tow legally. To be honest so far the Customer Services at FIAT are nothing short of useless, platitudes and 'sorry it's a safety recall'.

We are even seeing if the diesel models that are prevalent in the UK should have been included in the recall - given that the recall was due to fires in gasoline models.

I just had mine installed yesterday. The Larry H.? Miller dealer experience was cool, drove me home, I waited, picked me back up and returned me back to dealership. Took about 6 hours.
Question: The dealership said to not use the hitch for towing. I asked what was the difference, they said it was the way it was mounted.??? This makes no sense. They then said I could do "light towing?" Whats the difference between a factory installed towing hitch and the safety recall tow hitch?:emotions34:

"The way it was mounted" Did they bolt it to the floorboards? LOL, Its the same Mopar hitch you would get from them minus the little box that houses the wiring plug, Its a liability thing but now the dealers are making themselves sound dumb, I would tow anything that the Jeep is rated too with it, Already used mine with a receiver hook to yank a van from a snow bank and it held up just fine! Now I just need to get the wiring done.

My gas tank recall experience

Yes I just had the recall done here in Canada and to my awful surprise all I got was a "Trailer Hitch" frame. No wiring and no ball hitch. They forgot to mention to me that I would have to pay for this. Great marketing scam Chrysler, let us pay for your recalls. I'm Pissed!

I saw in 2005 when I bought my Liberty that the gas tank was not well protected from damage and installed a Draw-Tite hitch myself. When the recall was announced it took about six months to actually get an appointment at the Jeep dealer shop to have it looked at.
I waited for about one hour and was told ok, your hitch meets the fix requirements. I asked Chrysler in Michigan customer service contact how I could be reimbursed for my hitch. No can do if it is not a Mopar part I was told even after escalating the call.

I was about to contact my congress member when I thought again and emailed my local CBS news station Consumer Reporter describing my situation. Result, I was phoned by a rep at Chrysler who said they would send me a check after I emailed him my receipt. I just cashed the check.
Do Not Let them rip you off. Stand Up for this and all Consumer Rights. My local Consumer Reporter told my this type of thing happens all the time since these laws and recalls have no enforcement teeth. Be Vigilant my friends.

Mine saved my butt 3 weeks back when someone slammed into the back of me, Dented in my gas tank skid plate real good too, Would have been much worse if the hitch was not there.

How is that working out for you? I was planning to use mine for the same thing. I assume the hitch is strong enough, but when they say it can't be used for towing they are just saying that to avoid liability issues.

It is a Class III Hitch which usually have a max tongue weight of 600# which is good enough for a utility basket or bike rack. Even if it was a Class I hitch it would still support a bike carrier and a few bikes no problem. Although with Class I & II you would require a 1-1/4" to 2" Adapter as most carriers and baskets I see are 2".

So, it looks like Jeep/Chrysler in US is processing these already, Chrysler Canada still has not even sent out the letters, and the dealers are not doing these yet.

This is the recent recall, N46, where they add / modify a trailer hitch to provide low speed crash protection.

In checking the Mopar site which chrylsercanada linked to, my 2004 Jeep Liberty has this N46 recall outstanding.

I went to my local dealer, they wanted to schedule an appointment to inspect the vehicle but wouldn't add the trailer hitch. I left frustrated.

I called Chrysler US by mistake (800 853 1403) and they had a great pre-recorded message explaining the recall. I waited to talk to a representative as I wanted to know if my vehicle did not have a hitch, if they would add it. After verifying me as the owner, he said yes. When he asked for my ZIP code I realized I had called US number

He then referred me to the Canadian customer support centre at 800 465 2001. After verifying me as owner, and checking my VIN, I had a great discussion with the representative there. It seems Chrysler Canada has not yet sent the letters out to owners and is not ready to start yet - soon he said.

So I asked him about adding a hitch to a hitch-less Jeep - he said yes. So back to the dealer once they issue the letters and the dealer clues in to what's happening.

BTW, the American representative had offered to call my local dealer - that's when we found out I had called the US instead of the Canadian one.

So - anyone else tried to have this recall processed in Canada ?

How did it work out ?

When an out of Province inspection was done a new hitch was installed as I assume from the recall. Very curious what exactly do they do?

how long does the recall last because i bought a used 2004 liberty and it has no hitch on it.
