So I'm trying to do a head gasket Nov on my 02 Libby 3.7. I'm down to removing the crank pulley and I'm stuck. I have a 3 has puller in it at the tabs. Made sure everything was straight. The problem is as im cranking down on the wrench, the pulley won't move but the crank(?) or whatever the shaft is the the crank pulley is on, it moves backwards toward the back of motor. Is that normal? Am I missing something?

It's such a incremental process. Problem I had was the craftsman puller really was not long enough. But the motor was out of the jeep so it was not a issue.

What your describing is very odd. Do you have the correct spacer/adapter on the puller, the crank shouldn't slide. But the process of pulling the balancer is slow .

The only issue pulling balancer so can think of is If you don't have the adapter in can go in to the threading on the crank and really mess it up. The balancer/ pulley staying still and the crank shaft moving shouldn't happen. It's bolted in so tightly

Well the center hole of the pulley was flush with the crank after turning the puler it has moved probably 1/4" to 1/2" back. I have pics just dont know how to post them. I tried kroil and some heat. Nothing. There isn't any more bolts besides the center bolt?

Seems like the pulley must have moved some in relation to the crank to become flush. How about tightening the pulley back on the crank and cleaning the little exposed part of the crank with a wire brush or emery cloth, then oil and try again.

There's a tiny bit of fore/aft play in every crank called "thrust". I think your pulley moved a bit and got jammed on a lip of road crud or rust on the end of the crank.

I don't know the 3.7 engine but I've agonized over rusty stuck stuff before.

Idk if the center shaft was flush with the crank pulley but close. I just screwed the but back on and it looks like its close to where it was, it being the center shaft the pulley is on. Should I just crank down harder on the pulley puller? It got very hard to turn that's when i stoped and made my post.
