Had my Jeep in the shop for the Ball Joint Recall. He gives me a calling saying they are finishing up the ball joints, but noticed that my brakes are low. Only about 10% left and they can replace them right here while the tires are off. Don't want to scare you Mr. Richards its not a safety hazard yet but it needs to be replaced very soon. Mind you I only have 22k on her. So I say no thanks, I'll take care of it latter.

Get her home pop off the tires and take a look. Still probably almost 75% of the pad left, no where near needing to be replaced at all.

I guess those dealers are all the same.

If it is covered under warranty...go for it. I don't think they are though.

Sounds like something Firestone would've said to you. I would make a complaint to the manager. If we don't raise the complaint level on these attrocities, they will continue. You could try one of those news channels. They usually have a consumer awareness program.

Even if you have the factory 3/36 warranty normal wear items i.e. brake pads and shoes, and wiper blades are only 12mos/12,000 miles. Even if it would be covered under warranty at no charge to yourself and there is more than 75% left the dealer would be screwing Chrysler because if you dont pay for it Chrysler is paying them to do it.

I'm sure it wouldn't be covered under warranty. I mean what do they take me for. Those have to be some pretty crappy breaks to be gone at 22k with some considerable highway millage. Its kind of a small place so it was actually the service manger that called and told me that.

I think I'm going to let it be now, the still need to do some work on her. The rear ring and pinion wasn't set up right from the factory so they ordered some new ones which are suppose to be installed Tuesday. Don't want to upset them too much. I've see how certain tech/dealers drive the cars. I can't be their to baby sit so I will say something afterwards and look for another dealer.

I am sure they were. A brake job to a mechanic that is working on flat rate is gold. It will take him if he is good about 20-30 minutes to do but gets paid average per vehicle in any manual 1.1 hours so if a brake lining is even questionable he is going to try and sell the job.

My delaer has only screwed me on the oil change, mainly because small items to will go to a truck tire shop (they work on regular cars too) for, like inspections, and what not. I only go to the dealer for oil changes cause I have some free coupons to use up. But a couple of changes ago they were short one quart filling her back up. I didn't realize this till i got home, and the dealer is waaaaaaay on the other side of town, a good 30 minute drive atleast.

Now they have been good about listening to my problems, and working around my schedule to get me in for work. Last oil change I did while I was off for x-mas, I drove down there, dropped it off, and they gave me a ride back to my house, AND picked me up when the Jeep was ready.

I really do hate to leave my Jeep at a place that far away from where I am. I too have seen how they drive some of the new vehicles for sale on the lot (I.E. flooring the gas pedal while starting the engine (keep in mind brand new engine)), when moving the cars, they shift and automatic ****** from reverse into drive at about 5mph in reverse, that sort of stuff.

From now on, I check my oil BEFORE i leave the lot. I'll pull off around the corner from the garage (still on the sales lot) and pop the hood to make sure. The coupon said one COMPLETE free oil change. It's not COMPLETE when they don't fill it back up all the way.

Now that I think about it, I contacted chrysler about that one, and they mailed me a new coupon....can't beat that!

HAHA \:D/

I got those same coupons. I dont have to pay for an oil change for 3 years 36000 miles. The only thing is a simple oil change takes them forever...nothing like a jiffy lube done in 15 minutes. The last time I brought it in they said it would be about 2 hours because they had a line even though I was there at 7 am on a saturday. I agredd and went in to the show floor to waste time and talked to my sales person. I told him it was going to be two hours so he threw me the keys to his demo and told me to take it. I drove a new Durango around for a couple of hours which was cool. I came back in a little over two hours and my jeep was just goin up on a lift.

Now i figured since it was in the shop it wouldnt be too long. It still took 45 minutes. I could see my Jeep from the service area. I like the fact the guy was being thorough but it took him about 5 minutes to check my brakes. First with a flash light, then he slowly walked to his box and got a mirror and walked around to all for wheels. I walked back and was like "How does she look?" He said alright but these new brakes are hard to get a good angle to see without removing the wheel. I agreed with him but then asked "Do you think there could be much wrong with them with only 2500 miles" He just got a stupid look on his face and put his mirror away.

That makes me mad to hear that. I wouldn't doubt it.

Boy, find a trustworthy mechanic and it's like having a new best friend. I hope my dealers shop isn't like that... I have only had one oil change so far.

So what is the average miles between brake jobs on a KJ?

Unless you're having problems with them, I wouldn't even think about brakes until around 40,000 kms (~25k miles). Then I'd expect that all's I need to do is take a look at them and estimate when they'll need replacing. For example if they're 75% gone then maybe 50k kms (~30k miles) will be all you'll get, everyone is going to be slightly different.
Also the only way you'll know how much % they're gone is to know how thick the pads should be in the first place... this I don't know, maybe someone else could help here.

Although it's not much to go on (due to weight differences) my neon has needed 5 sets (including the first ones) and I'm just about to crest 250k kms (~155k miles) and they'll be good for a bit yet. Average replacement on that car has been around 55k kms (~34k miles). I'm expecting the Liberty (with it's thicker pads) to be about the same in the long run, only time will tell.

I replaced my set at a lil over a year, and about 13k miles. was really ticked off that it just went over the one year warranty on the brakes. i have a lil over 30k now, and the brakes seems to be still good....dealer didnt tell me it was low, i had to bring it in since it was really bad....rotors were warped, and too much brake fade.....i've read a couple of other posts over at JU with quick brake replacements......

well the way I drive and how poeple cut me off, I would say i'd be lucky to get another 10K out of them (i'm at 20K now).

The last time I brought it in they said it would be about 2 hours because they had a line even though I was there at 7 am on a saturday.

I wish mine would give me a rental. Instead I got this old dude who drove me back in a loaded Town & Country, and couldn't drive to save his life.....or my heart for that matter. Waiting till he got to the white line to slam on the brakes. Flooring it to the speed limit, then pokin along down the street, taking up all the lanes, listening to that oldies/country music, ya know what i'm talkin about?

Plus, the van was covered top to bottom in advertisements for the dealership. Had their name all over the place. That man scared the piss out of me with the way he drove.....had this look on my face the whole way home and back to the dealer eek.gif

I got taken by this scam when I came in for the same recall. My mechanic had looked at the brakes the week before when he was doing something else, and he said they were fine good for another 25K, but I didn't find this out until after the dealer told me they needed to be replaced, and I spent a significant amount of money to have them do it. I don't quote specifics because I don't remember how much it was, but it was more than my local guy would have charged. ](*,)

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like all dealers are the same. They don't call them stealerships for nothing.

Wow, I just called a local Midas store and asked him how much a '02 liberty would cost for both front and rear pads. He quoted me 160 bucks including labor.

Did you guys take your KJ to the dealer?
