DuraTracs's vs. Grabber AT2

So I'm still trying to decide on new tires...narrowed down between DuraTracs or General Grabber AT2s. I had actually "decided" on Duratracs, but then I had to dump $2800 into my engine...so cash is a little tight right now.

That being said, winter is upon is and the crap stock wranglers are not going to cut it anymore. I'm looking at load E DuraTracs, and the Grabbers are also load E.

I'm finding both to have good reviews...but see some negative reviews as far as tread wear and life of the Grabbers. Has anyone used them and experienced this. I think the Duratracs are a better tire, but a set of 5 will run me $1000, plus mounting and balancing. Grabbers would be over $200 cheaper. So I'm really looking for best value.

Snow performance is #1 priority for me as the KJ is my daily driver and work doesn't close...but I do need something that will also perform alright off-road (I'm not expecting it to perform like an M/T) just decent traction on trails and good sidewall protection.

Duratracs all the way
50,000 on mine rotated every 4000 miles , no issues, no problems, wear great, FANTASTIC in snow, when these go there will be another set of the same on mine

Off road they do really good as well , not as good as a Gumbo Mudder or a Ground Hawg like I used to run years ago. But for an on-offroad general tire these are hard to beat

Yeah, I know that's the right answer. I just don't know when I'll be able to swing another grand for tires. But I guess in the long run whats an extra $200...especially if I'll get a lot more life out of them. I supposed I could buy 4 for now, and then at 4-5000 miles buy the fifth to start doing a 5 tire rotation to help defray the upfront cost a little.

Silent Armor's are really good in the snow, ok off-road and probably are "slightly" cheaper then duratracs. Might be another option?

Silent armors are not cheaper here, they do come in other sizes that the duratracs do not which would be the only way i would choose them.

If the priority is snow, i think everyone knows what the answer is.

Find a cheapo used mismatched brand (not size) spare and buy 4 good tires and a proper spare when you can afford it.

No idea what the expectation of mileage is for AT2.

The general grabber's AT II's rubber compound has supposedly been reformulated (it was too soft causing a short treadlife). I was told that this was part of the problem that caused a national backorder. They have a tread life rating of 50,000 miles I believe.

I guess I could C rated tires, but I figured if I'm going to do it and it's $20 more per tire I might as well do E, basically for increased sidewall durability off-road. But I've been reading a lot about how harsh the ride is on an E rated tire, and that you basically have to air them down to minimum pressure which can cause them to wear poorly....so maybe C is the right option and it'll save me a few bucks.

I have grabber at2s on my kj and they are serving me just fine with my combo. I have duratracs on my 1960 cj willys and they are a bit nosier but all in all they both are outstanding in the snow among other conditions along with mud. I do find that my grabbers are a bit better in the sand though.

I stand corrected...thought I saw them cheaper back when I was searching for tires...but seems to be other way around - Silent Armor's are definitely more $...

I've got Grabbers on my KJ and they haven't let me down. I can't say their the best tire but for the price you can't go wron with them. You'll definately get your money out of them. Matter of fact the ones I have on my kj are 3 years old and the back ones are bald at the moment and I'm still driving in the snow with no issues. I have another set I bought that had 100 miles on I've got to take off of some ford wheels and mount on my wheels that I'm going to do this week when I get paid. My almost new tires and wheels cost me 200 dollars even and I'm selling the wheels for another hundred once I get the switching done.

Best tires I've ever owned were BFGoodrich Long Trails I had them on a Yota for better than 10 years and they never even showed a sign of wear, never slid with them either but I also never went truly off road with them either. Lot of snow milage though.

I've also had BFGoodrich AT which are AWESOME when you first get them but once you put some milage on them they wear way to quick. Lot of money to drop for just a year of use.

BFGs are 1980s
