I have got to get rid of this mud, but I have no clue what I'm doing. I've done a bit of surface cleaning, but the entire engine and everything that surrounds it is covered in mud.

What does everyone else do? What works without ruining electronics / alternator / water in engine?

Southeast of disorder...
Well, some may call it blasphemous but what I'd do is go to the local car wash, one you've used before if possible so you know what pressures the hose is capable of. Drop in some tokens/quarters and set the dial to 'engine degreaser' if it has it, 'presoak' if not. On LOW pressure (without pulling the trigger on the wand) spray the engine compartment, being careful around the air intake. You can get some small drops down in the airbox, but you don't want to flood it. Let it sit for a couple of minutes while you turn the selector to 'rinse' and flush the wand til clear water runs out, then rinse the engine, again on LOW. Thats it...

The thing to remember is that engine components are designed to work with some exposure to water; how do you think those guys go thru water up to the hood (or higher with a snorkel attached (biggrin) ). You don't want to let them sit underwater for a long period, but what you expose them to at a car wash would be no worse than driving thru a heavy rain storm.

Thats my opinion anyway. Prime the tank and let the flaming begin icon996.gif

Its fine to spray the 3.7 gasser down, not to sure about the diesel. Since it doesnt have spark plugs, I would say it would be safer.

Get some purple power stuff and dilute it 2:1 or something like that. Start the engine and let it get warm(not hot!), and spray everything with a water hose(nice steady stream, not a hard stream!). Spray the diluted purple stuff everywhere and let sit for while. Scrub any bad places and wash off with a steady stream and then start it. Drive it around to make sure everything is ok and to help dry it off. Park it and be happy. You can also put your choice of shiny stuff on all the plastic if your like.

I actually just ordered some meguiars All seasson dressing from Autodetailingsolutions.com just for that. I didnt get the gallon which was around $30, I got the sample of 32oz for $10. Im so obsessed with car detailing crap it not funny. I know Ive spent over $400 in the past few months.. 8-[

Tomorrow is going to be a busy day I see!

1. Drop Engine skid, get rid of cruddy mud, sand, repaint.
2. Finish vacuuming.
3. Clean engine compartment.
4. Help aunt move new stuff in house.
5. Go back to school... Monday morning because i for darn sure aren't doing it Sunday night...
6. Look to see options as far as getting away from campus.
7. Go to The Apple Store.

None of those are in chronological order and 3 or more may not get done.

But this is great. After I'm done with this, I can finally take care of that ball joint recall....

I just finished a dealer worthy engine cleanign that I did in my driveway with a 1800 PSI powerwasher.

Here is the secret. (This is Bennetts idea that I tried and it works like magic.)

Buy some simple green MAX, the black bottle stuff.

Spray it on everything where mud and plastic/rubber meet.

Let is sit for a few minutes and then power wash the F*** out of it. At HIGH PRESSURE.

This will not work with a garden hose or anything less than 1500 PSI.

The higher the pressure the more effective the cleaning.

Do not worry about water in your air intake, its waterproof damn it. You can dump gallons of water into your intake while the engine is running and it wont even blink, and I've done it.

Done. Just went to the car wash, presoaked...and degreased everything then rinsed everything off at low rinse pressure. Missed a spot, so I'll have to go back.

As is common knowledge, the 2.8L air intake is *not* as waterRESISTANT as the 3.7L intake. I avoided that area as much as I could. I don't want to be the one with the wet air filter...

Agreed. No need in forcing water into the spark plugs or into sensors that don't get along with water very well.

And for the record, Simple Green (regular kind) and Greased Lightning are my cleaners of choice. I've also got some purple power, and it did OK, but the other two, IMO, did better. All were used at full strength (not dilluted).

That looks ten times better than it did before! I may have to go find a car wash with that option now, my engine bay is nowhere near that clean!

The inlet will be just fine. You do not need to cover it up or anything. Water that goes back in there just drains down to the bottom of the box and drains out through little holes in it.. O:)

What do you guys do for the air inlet into the air box? Just stuff a towel in there?
I don't think you really have to worry about it. Just keep the water away from the inlet.

You guys sound like a bunch of women afraid that you are gonna get your skirts wet....

For God's sake you drive Jeeps damn it, the airbox if freaking made to take water in and dump it right back out, The CRD is no exception. It just has less water crossing ability. Do you crybabies park your jeeps under a damn tent when it rains.

Seriously WTF.

Hmm, no breasts yet (dammit ](*,) ) I just don't see the need to use high pressure water where it isn't needed. I have no problem drenching the whole damn engine with water, but I'd rather do it at normal pressure. If you've done it that way without problems then cool, but I'll still do it my way...
