Hello I have been a member for a little while but have never posted before today. I started a thread earlier but realised it was in wrong section so im reposting here. So recently my 2005 motor grenaded and I swapped in a 2006 motor from a parts jeep I have. I put in 2005 crank/cam sensors in 2006 motor as well as exhaust manifolds, injectors, coil packs, intake...basically everything. My limited amount of research tells me that this should be a strait swap with no issues between 2005-2006 motor. But now im wondering if my 2005 computer and cam/crank sensors are not meshing well with the ring on crank and reluctor wheel on cam as im getting a P0340 error. I have tried with both 2005 and 2006 crank/cam sensors in block and no dice.

05 and 06 swap should be plug and play

I am assuming you are no start at this point?

1st q: are you sure the spare engine actually ran?

Oh yes it ran beauitifuly the donor jeep was in very good mechanical shape and drove it to where I parked it 3yrs ago. Had a trashed interior and body need work. My 2005 I am second owner bought it at 35000km was still running when it had a catastrophic head gasket failure and still started and ran when i took motor out but would overheat as it pressurised the cooling sys pushing everyting into overflow bottle. I figured an engine swap was probaly quicker and much cheaper than pulling both heads off and possibly having to have them milled and then regasket the whole motor, which I plan to do later as it only has 165000 km on it. Now I have a no start condition and am getting a P0340 code when i plug in computer...recheched harness when motor was out and retaped whole harness as allot of the tape and plastic covering on harness from factory was brittle. About the only peice im even using from the 2006 motor other than short block is the fuel rail, so other than running breaking out a manual and figuing where those sensors end at computer and testing to make sure I have no wiring issues im kinda a a loss here. The 2005 has stamped steel valve covers and 2006 had plastic like valve covers and I know there were minor head differences in the 2 motors but it was my understanding that 2005-2007 block and internals are same. Am I missing something here?

Ok. I understand better now.

So a few thoughts, and you just hit upon the major topic is to verify your wiring.

Basics count.

We know it ran, so compression should be good.

From your code, it appears we are chasing cam position. Since you did retaping on the harness, there is a real possibility that there is a broken wire (inside the insulation) that doesn't show.

So yeah, a harness evaluation is in order. Remember, these things are very squirrely on electrical issues.

For beginning, i'd verify power, ground, and signal/control at each connector. Cam, crank, coils.

You hopefully did not skip the ground connections on the back of the heads, running by strap to the stud on the firewall. If you did, run a jumper from batt neg to the block and see if it starts.

Update: So after much hair pulling and and new cam and crank sensors I think I finally have my have my answer and its not what I was expecting. I tested all my grounds, I tested from the plugs all the way back to ECM as well as testing for a constant 5v on both outside terminals of both cam and crank sensor plugs. Plugged in sensors to loom and get voltage drop when sensors are grounded so all my wiring is working perfectly. Sensors are working then I stumbled onto the possibility that my 2005 rocky mountain edition is actually hiding a dirty secret and it has 2004 ECM in it strait from the factory. I have already ordered a haynes repair manual and a chiltons as well just to cover my bases and confirm for me 100% that what im thinking is in fact the case. So now Im left with the question?....which one is less work, option #1 fix the head gasket in the old motor not knowing if im going to find a warped head. Or option #2 split the 2006 motor at the crank and put a the tone ring from original on the crank and a new set of 2004 timing chains on it which comes with new reluctor ring on cam. Either way I have to pull the timing chains but im leaning towards splitting the bottom end of new motor and just pulling all the bearing caps, leaving all the pistons in the bores and switching out tone ring as the easier quicker option. Has anyone done this conversion? If so any thoughts on the matter would be welcome

Max :

Option 1 - HG would be the most direct route to getting up and running again.

The engine swap has some merit, especially if you know the history of the donor.

There are a lot of details in the engine swap (many threads) here and compatibility year to year

Have a gander at that one in particular.

Re the ECU - Let's count plugs and see if it is a 3 plug or 4 plug unit. That is the dividing line accourding to all we have seen here.

Its a 3 plug in my 05 compared to 4 in my 06 thats kinda why i figured I have 2004 wiring, its my understanding jtec computers are 3 plug

Yep. U got it!

So now, if you want to use the donor engine, if i read it right, need upper and lower work. Reluctor down low and cam rings up top.

Well to finish this thread I opted to change the tone ring and reluctor wheel. Here are a few pics of the the fun, threw it back together and it fired up almost instantly. Ran a bit rough for a few min as the computer was reset and all data cleared, but it soon smoothed right out and runs like a champ

A couple more pics that I couldnt upload with first batch. 15yrs this jeep has never let me down, I drove it to where I parked it for its heart transplant. And yes there were a few complications along the way
But she is alive and well again. People keep asking me why I keep wrenching on this thing and why I dont just get something else. Had a close friend who has been watching me during this whole month long fiasco, ask me if if they bought me a new jeep would I take it and retire the liberty. And I strait up said no, Its my jeep I love this thing and its a labor of love. No one turns bolts or touches anything on this but me, its been that way for 15 yrs. I cant explain why I love this stupid jeep so much but I do, and hope to drive it for another 15 yrs at least.:)
