I've been researching for way way way too long, but last night I finally bought one. Got a 2007 Jeep Liberty Sport 4x4, Manual, Inferno Red. No additional options.
Paid $18,500 including all fees.

Not too sure if that's a good deal or not, but it seemed pretty good. Invoice was $19,279 (includes $3000 rebate)

I will have to add some skid plates and whatever else I think I may need after I get a higher paying job and have some extra moolah laying around. Now that I got something for offroad it looks too good and cost too much to take offroad. I'll have to break it in this weekend and get over that psychological hurdle.

Congrats. You're gonna enjoy the hell out of it.
I like the Infernal Red color myself. My previous KJ was Red.

I know what you mean about not wanting to mess with it right now, while it's new and pristine.

Have fun.

Congrats.................By doing your research you got what you wanted.

You should consider skids and towhooks if you are going off road. The oem skids are good but not the heaviest but not as expensive as other heavier duty ones. But cheep insurance (protection). The oem hooks have all the proper hardware for attachment. You don't have to be in a hurry. Get used to your new Jeep first and have fun with it.

Command-Trac Question:

I want to try out the 4-wheel drive on some forest roads this weekend, but after reading the manual and looking at the lever I don't get it, so I'm afraid to pull it.

Can someone please explain how to go from 2WD to 4-HI? I'm afraid I'll break something or accidentally put it in 4-LO. Help !!!

Mac check this link out.

http://www.jeep.com/4x4/index.html

I don't think you could accidentally get into 4LO. While driving under 55 mph, just pull 4wd selector up, you should have "part-time" light lit up on dash.

4LO- driving 2-3 mph, put in transmission in N, then shift (Transfer case)4WD selector to 4LO, move from transmission from N to D or whichever gear you want.

I forgot to mention I have a manual transmission. Not sure if that makes a difference. I read the link you provided so I sort of get it.

Is this correct:
I'm going 40 mph for example in 4th gear.
While staying in 4th gear just pull the handle towards me.
I'm now in 4-HI.

Do I need to take foot off of accelerator?
Do you pull the handle all the way, half-way? I see on the handle it has 4-LO, 4-HI, N, 2-HI. How do I know how hard to pull the handle towards me to get 4-HI and not one of the other options?

I've never been in a manual Liberty, but I dont believe that would affect the transfer case at all.

*EDIT: And your Jeep should have come with a little mirror hang card about the 4wd system. I used that the first few times so I was sure I was doing it correctly.

No hang card in mine. Also didn't get any pin# or key code that the instruction manual said I should have received.

The transfer cases have sort of a safety feature built into them.

Just pull up on the handle untill you feel it "click" (for lack of a better word) into 4hi. The part time light on the dash will come on. You don't have to take your foot off the skinny pedal, however, I have found, atleast on Jeeps with automatics) that taking your foot off, and then putting it back on the pedal will help it engage quicker and smoother. This has been the case with my jeep....but then I have an automatic.

The safety feature is that in order to get the transfer case into neutral, you have to move it over to the right slightly while you are pulling towards you. If you're going into 4lo, you'll have to move it to the right to get it to neutral, then once you've reached neutral, move it to the left and keep pulling towards you to get into 4lo. This is to help prevent you accidentally shifting into the wrong setting, or you accidentally knocking it out of a particular setting (say when offroad or such).

This is why, if you'll notice on handle for the transfer case, it's not a "straight line" in between the settings on the handle.

The pin# or key code should be on your paperwork that you got with your jeep since you bought it new. If not, the dealer has it. Check with them when you get your first oil change. By then you might have a couple of questions for them anyway and they should do the first oil change free. The keys are expensive to replace so you don't want to lose one.

Oh, and for accidentally putting it into 4Lo, you'll definitely know if you've gone too far. In fact, you should find somewhere with loose dirt and put it into 4Lo once just so you know what it will sound like.

I plan on practicing this weekend either in some snow or out on a forest road. 4-HI doesn't sound too tough, 4-LO sounds like it could be more of a challenge to get to though. I'm sure it'll be easy after a few times.......I just don't want to damage anything during the learning curve.

Once I'm in one of these settings do I have to do anything special to get back to 2WD so I can get back home?

Just the reverse of what you did to get it in. The only thing that can be tricky is 4lo. Just remember to slow down to 2-3mph, stay rolling at that speed, and put the ****** in neutral while you're going in or out of 4lo.

And make sure you dont actually rev it in neutral and then try to put it into 4LO. I've done that once and will never do it again. I apologized to it for days.

One thing to remember when shifting in or out of 4LO (especially out of 4LO) is to make it a smooth movement. In other words, after the ****** is in neutral and you are rolling 2-3 mph, just shift the transfer case in one fluid motion from 4HI to 4LO. Don't pause the transfer case in the N position. This can cause the gears to not want to mesh correctly. This happens more when trying to shift back up to 4HI. If you pause in N, you may not be able to get it back in either setting. If this happens, just shut off the engine in neutral and I think you can shift the T-case into the desired setting and turn the engine back on. Someone correct me on this if I'm wrong, but thats what the manual says I believe and I've had this problem personally... BTW, congrats on the new Libby!
