Actually your both right.. it is a vent, but it has a valve like flap in there thats pressure sensitive, it takes X amount of internal pressure before it burps, then the little gray medium allows the gas to vent but keeps stuff from getting in and clogging it back up.
Anyway.. Moot Point... I have had an Optima YellowTop in the house for years now, its my backup battery for my radio gear. One of these days i plan on adding one or two more to increase capacity but the cost has kept me from doing it.
I also have a UPS hooked up to two larger Gel Cell batteries on the floor, it's been that way for almost two years now and there is no detectable odor from them either. Though the UPS float charges them with less than half an amp and only goes to 1.5 amp on a quick charge cycle.
