Fram oil filter updated.

Doing an oil change today I noticed Fram modified their filter. Less metal to secure the threaded mounting area. A more recessed face, and more oval shaped holes. I've been using Fram for years without issue, but..............
Does the threaded area (filter on left) look risky? Mayby the new face has better flow characteristics? My main reason for using Fram is the black grippy goo on the end--makes for easier filter swappin.

Try Pureolators filters in the gold box,there coated in that grippy stuff also and a much better filter.

The redesign on the Fram doesn't look like a bad thing but if you believe oil filter studies where they are cut open, there are not many Fram filters that you want.

Knowing the construction of the filter is helpful but the real way to compare oil filters is to have the old oil analyzed at a lab.

champion labs recently bought the fram line. that base plate is similiar to the ecore base plate with out the tin cover plate. it is just champion labs getting the product lines more similiar. i agree less metal! mike

I looked at the gold purolator at meijer this evening. It had overspray of that grippy crap inside the filter. Basically I guess its like paint and maybe the oil would just take care of it, but man, they sure are sloppy.

...and the Mobil one's were 12.49! The other choice was fram.

I didn't buy any oil filters this time.

The Mobil 1 filters is one of the top filters out there,always ranked 1 or 2 depending on what test is being done.Performs betetr in most cases then amsoil EA filters at over half the cost.

Ok so now I'm thinking If their were an oil filter wrench that was a good fit for othe Libby, it would eliminate the need for the gripp shxx. Our filters are in a little bit of an odd position. But I've seen alot worse.

I put mine on hand tight and don't ever need a wrench. Never a leak. I don't need the grip paint either. I don't think you should need a filter wrench if you tighten it with just your hand.

Yeah, I was surprised. I think they did an overhaul on their oil section. Now they have 5.1 quart jugs of Mobil1. Why 5.1? I have no freakin clue. I think its because Walmart has the 5 quart jugs and they have a deal that won't allow Meijer to have them.

Yeah, I picked up the Mobil 1 there this past weekend. Had been buying the 5 qt jugs at Walmart.

I got one of the "better" Fram filters - I think it was the Extended one...totally missed the Purolators.
