The green eye Delco I referred to came in a new GM car I bought . Wonder if they're available over the counter somewhere ? If they are , wonder if they're still made by the same company ?

Green eyed sealed GM batteries are long time discontinued. Green eyes did not always work when water levels dropped.
It was believed that lead acid should have removable caps so one can add distilled water, especially for those in warmer climate areas.
Unfortunately non sealed lead acid types will still will vent and cause corrosion issues.
To avoid corrosion issues alone, sealed AGM's should be considered over lead acid batteries today.

The Delco Remy Freedom battery (green eye) was from the 70's and 80's. I've had them, but the all seeing eye didn't seem to forewarn me better than the first cold weather snap did! lol

Yep, you can always count on mother nature to give your battery a cold weather analysis. "Rule of thumb" (read not law) is, if battery survives the first good freeze of the season, you're good for the winter. I've never had that mother nature test fail.
