Alright, my dad was at his mechanics today to drop off the seats for his truck to the mechanics wife who does car interior fixing. My dad mentioned to his mechanic about a jeep liberty because i want to buy one and his mechanic said dont buy one because they are crap. He never went into detail as to why but anyways, he went to another mechanic who owns a jeep (not a liberty, he never said what) and said its crap also. So now my parents are starting to try and get me away from buying a jeep which i dont want to do. They got a big say in this purchase since they are giving me some money to buy a new car as part of my grad gift. I need some help in to sway them away from beleiving the mechanic because i dont beleive they are right and i dont want those boneheads to be the reason i dont get a liberty. So any way you guys could help me out would be great thanks!

I'd ask them to go back to the mechanics and get specifics on why they don't like the Liberty. If all they can offer is personal opinion based on what they've heard then ignore them - you can find that kind of like or dislike for most every vehicle made.

consumer reports has them or at least used to have them listed as a best buy, and they hold thier value really well.

You can never listen to people like that. Most of the time they are making up a bunch of BS just for the heck of it..

There have been far to many libertys sold to say they are crap. I read over many forums about libertys and they are proven to be very reliable.

Things do happen and every liberty cannot be perfect.. Your
luck, you would get one and something would happen..

This may not help with a Liberty, but I am in the market too right now. I drive a 1999 Grand Prix. My uncle's friend (uncle is really into muscle cars, he has a bunch) who is a mechanic was working on my previous car when I was looking for a prix. I asked him if I should get a GT (3.8L) or a GTP (supercharged 3.8L). He told me he'd love it if I got a GTP, they go through S/C's like crazy and I'd be paying to refinish his house.

Yeah, many people have 200k+ on a stock S/C with no problem.

Sounds like this mechanic is a Chevy guy. So, of course Ford and Chrysler suck. My uncle is this way. My friends all work for Chrysler, so Jeep and Chrysler are the absolute best. Me? I've owned all three and I think they all have their good and bad points.

Fall apart? How? I've driven just about every form of Liberty from 3 miles to 250,000 miles and they've all held up just about the same, with no major issues inside or out.

Everybody seems to love their Liberty...

Let me tell you, I hated Jeep and all other Chrysler products, Im a huge ford fan, but when I bought the libertey after doing some research, I have owned it for a year now, all I can say is wow, if something happend to my jeep I would replace it in a second, dont listen to a mechanic do the research in a consumer review book, trust us we no what where talking about, its your money

Hey there,
I can only agree with what everyone else has said.
I'll also add my two cents worth.
#1. Said mechanic is biased. Our Liberty has over 130,000.00 Km on the
clock! Jen and I have already put on 11.500.00 km since we bought
it on December 2nd 2006! We received all literature with our rig. Including
service records. Some warranty work (ie. Ball joints that I had done!),
but mostly regular scheduled maintenance.
Hell, I even have original window sticker!
#2 Since being an owner we have had no problems with it. I'm not saying
that something might croak and need replacing. It's a motor vehicle,
they all need work some day!
#3 Sorry, but I think as well that your fathers mechanic's brain is falling
apart. :D
#4 Seeing that your in British Columbia, PM me if you live in the lower
mainland and I'll let you drive our jeep for real test drive and go up
Burke Mountain and do a little wheelin' then we'll go for a Kokanee Eh?
We can shoot the shit about Liberty's and go look at some at some
dealers.

Your call.

I understand what you mean about getting what your parents would rather have you get because they are putting $$$ into it. However, you should tell them about this website and the information that you have gained talking directly to the owners of these vehicles. A mechanic is only going to tell you they fall apart because he/she only see's the Liberties that have problems. Out of 850,000+ of them being on the road I am sure mechanics would see their fair share over the years, but not nearly enough to say that the vehicle is crap.

Good luck!
