Somewhere between being sane and insane!
The Op hasn't replaced a Toyota starter in a 4-runner with auto trans('90's thru early '00's) or a Honda starter on a 2.4.

The KJ's starter(3.7) is a cake walk compared to those 2.

As far as drum brakes.....................

Gm,Toyota,Honda, and some others still use drum brakes on model year 2016 vehicles still.Better parking brake then disc's.

So OP buys a 13 year old abused first production model vehicle and is mad about it and its design? Maybe he should have done some research into what he was purchasing in the first place. My 03 Renegade has almost 300K Km's on her and still driving wonderful (With the exception of repairs due to hard wheeling). I also find it funny that he is so angry over items that are not common issues on the Liberty KJ. I do hope this is just a case of excited delirium due to the latest street drug and not how OP normally presents himself. I am pretty sure I figured out who OP is referenced in the below photo!

I may have been a bit harsh about the Liberty. Just as with any recent vehicle, it has its share of issues. The "Exploder" has had them, too. However, at least I cab reach the bloody starter and not have to all but remove the engine to get to it! Also, the EX is STILL in production. Where is your precious little tin box? Hmmmmm! I don't see it!!!

 2015 Jeep Cherokee? Still being produced.

The Liberty is the continuation of the Cherokee. Was always going to be called a Cherokee until 9/11. Then some patriotic guy up top must have thought of the marketing scheme to call it the Liberty. Was still called the Cherokee in other countries. KJ Liberty (Cherokee) ran until 07 and the KK Liberty (Cherokee) ran until 2012. Took a small break in production, then released the latest Cherokee.

I'm not saying it's the best vehicle on the market...but all this over a starter position? Have you ever had a lateral engine FWD vehicle? Apparently not...

The fact of the matter is, the older the model is, the easier it is to work on (good rule of thumb).

Anyway...if this vehicle isn't for you, all you need to do is get rid of it. That's all.

I thought the Liberty wasn't called the Cherokee here because Jeep was going to keep making the Cherokee along with the Liberty but then at the last minute decided to stop making it and the Liberty was already the Liberty. Overseas the KJ was already scheduled to replace the XJ not exist with it.

Ford still uses drums as well. European cars easier to work on? LOL try replacing a starter on a BMW or mercedes:thumbsdown: Just like you said KJ is cake compared to some cars

All that Bacon would make some Bacon Cheese Burgers, and BLT's with lots of cold Beer. Hell I would share with Mrs. Palin too. And to Horse_Feathers get tarred and feathered because your threadjacked.gif now becomes Bacon.

When I replaced my starter I coated it with bacon grease and it slid right into place. I don't know why Horsefluffers didn't try that. :blah:

There, back on topic. :mexsmoke:

Coated the just the starter I assume, not the driveshaft?
I assume that if both would be greased it would slide by even better and faster ? !!
Now one other thought, smoked bacon or ??
I mean if smoked then the OP could have other issues afterwards from smelling the smoked smell and thinking his hooflicker was on fire. Then he'd be back again

If you loosen the bolts on the stranaflaster and slide the henway to one side you can get it in there with your eyes closed. You might even have bacon grease left over to fry up some eggs afterward. That's the way my cousin Clem did it on his.
