Install dome light over rear seats?

I've done 3 KJs and back in my XJ days did I think 13 or 14 of them
plenty of tape and just be like a carpenter, measure twice, cut once

Yes indeed that is the info I'm looking for. Sounds a bit scary actually, but I think I'm up for it. I am also still considering magnets, lol.

I just didn't think the headliner would be stiff enough to hold the fixture up there.

But I don't have a light over the rear seat like that... not even a little one to make a "bigger hole". That's why I wondered how other people attached theirs. I can't imagine there are going to be clips just waiting in the roof for me to attach the light to. The only lights I have are the one attached the the EVIC and the one way back by the gate. The one you have right their behind your cross member would be the perfect placement and it looks to me like there is something under the headliner holding it to the roof. Mine has no such thing.

Hey if you want a light like the one that I have I think that I have an extra that I could sell you like Tom was saying take your time when you cut heck when you install or installed the you will have or and to cut the headliner any how remember the saying "it's not yours till you cut the first hole in it" and size matters

The light weighs practically nothing at all. They are very lightweight so its not going to be pulling the headliner down any at all. Just don't cut where there is a rib going across
I have a couple extras laying around in the attic to do mine ( someday)
so can take a picture if you need to see what the light looks like backside

I hear ya Rev. ... it's not the process that scares me, it's just deciding if I really want these louvers in the hood ... FOREVER :happy175:

Secondly .. I like the location of yours... but with my hood I'm not going to be able to even get close. Pretty much the middle (all directions) of my hood is my only choice. :think:

I've wanted to do this for a long time - but with the sunroof and being unsure of the location of the crossmember I've gotten cold feet.

Would not want to have to replace the headliner - if I could even get one :shakehead:

Just tap into the dome light wiring simple the light is clips to the headliner and yes you will need to make the hole a little. Bigger

Is yours behind the crossmember because you couldn't get the wire through or under it? I ask because I'd prefer my light be in front of the cross memebr and don't want to cut before I know

On my 06 I have it behind the crossmember if you have a fish tape you maybe able to punch a hole between the crossmember and roof skin in the foam to run your wire at the ribs in the roof.

There is a flat spot on the headliner just for a light. I used a domelight out of a caravan. Worked great.

I think that they started that in 05 I know someone that has an 06 with the far back middle and the front main one from the factory

Plus I have a sunroof and I'm not sure how far back the glass and/or the mechanism slides. If I knew that then I'd put the light from a Caravan (like Rocky Mountain's) or Dodge truck in FRONT of the crossmember so it's more over the back seat rather than the cargo area.

Guess I'm too chicken to just cut a hole in the headliner and plod forward with the install... :baby:

Could you mount something like this on either or both sides, attached to a plastic area where it would be easily removed?

It could also be angled around to illuminate the cargo area better when you needed to.

PS: I wouldn't pay anywhere near that much for one, and I don't think you'd have to.

Just installed dome light assembly over the rear seats on my 02 Liberty. Big difference! Grabbed a 2009 Dodge Journey oval shaped assembly from junk yard that only comes on/off with doors open/closed and turning on the overhead with the instrument dimmer. My Liberty has a sunroof and Renegade light bar that made fishing the wires to the driver's side courtesy/floor light tricky but taking my time and measuring numerous times before cutting the headliner paid off. I replaced the 15 amp fuse with a 20 amp fuse to be safe and all works great! total time spent was less than 2 hrs and $25 bucks for the assembly, wire and fuse.
