Lift kits anywhere from $150-500.

The RRO Combo Kit is something like $200~

A full spring/shock replacement from Rusty costs $420

Then some good tires $600-1000 #-o

And sorry, I should re-phrase my last statement, you don't need a rear locker to be equal. That would give you a big edge though.

lift's would run you somewhere between 300- about 2000+ dollars...installation difficulty varies on the kit you get (7-up kits costs about 2000+)

the ARB locker at rocky road costs about 765 plus a compressor for about 260
ARB Air Locker differentials are designed to get rid of that spinning tire that does nothing on the trail but get you stuck. By installing a locker in your vehicle, you guarantee that you'll have full traction if you have a tire dangling in the air, are in the deepest mud, slipperiest snow, or gnarliest rockpile. It essentially 'locks' your differential.

The ARB air locker takes it one step further by allowing you to turn your locker on, and turn it off. No funky handling characteristics on the highway as with other lockers. ARB lockers put YOU in control!

One should NEVER traverse an incline sideways. Good way to roll your vehicle.

I agree, but that's exactly what he said the salesman did.

You're right about traversing sideways being dangerous, but sometimes you have no option! Then you need to know how far you can go before it rolls.

Most 4x4's will take about a 40 degree sideways tilt (which feels a lot!). If you do need to traverse an incline sideways, the rules are:

1. Get evrybody but the driver out of the vehicle.
2. Take all everything off the roof rack
3. Drive in 4lo in 1st and do NOT touch the throttle.
4. ALWAYS have a spotter.
5. If you feel like you are loosing control, turn the steering wheel towards the bottom of the incline.

Offroading is about knowing the limitations of your driving and your vehicle. Sometimes trial and error is the only way to know, so everything that is a new offroad driving skill must be done as slowly as possible to reduce th risk of damage and injury.

Tested Both

I went to a Land Rover Dealership where I test drove a 2003 Disco. You are not allowed to drive on the test course, but the guy you ride with will drive the course for you. It includes a very steep incline and a decline, where they show their auto decent control. The discos have a lot of their weight in the bottom half of the car making them less top heavy, as for the kj, I am not sure. I currently own a 2003 Jeep Liberty, and my friend owns a 1990 Range Rover. We often ride trails together, and I would have to say that his is slightly superior. He also has a lift kit while mine is stock. His car has also had a lot of mechanical problems and is quite a burden to drive. Ill keep my Kj.

First off who cares what the jack ass at work has!!!! I got a Disco and a Libby! I will say the Disco is more capable, but when the Lucas electronics gremlin shows his face you will be stuck in BFE with the Rover!!! I know from experience! HOWEVER ONE THING YOU MUST ALL REMEMBER.... A GOOD DRIVER CAN GET A HELL OF A LOT FARTHER DOWN TRAIL IN A LESS CAPABLE VEHICLE THAN SOME YUPPIE ****** IN THEIR HIGHLY CAPABLE VEJICLE!!! And that's all I gots to say about that! Learn how to drive off the pavement and know your limits!

Ah, yes, the venerable Lucas electronics. Best described by the phrase 'Mirrors, tallow candles and pagan magic' (biggrin)

When talking to to just about every British car mechanic, the name Lucas is universally followed by Prince of Darkness. Ex. The headlight switch is made by Lucas-Prince of Darkness. We'll have the part is 3 weeks, don't drive at night. They will also tell you that Lucas parts have 3 undocumented settings. Dim, Flicker and Intermittent. O:)

At the Cleveland Auto Show they were taking people for rides in various Jeep models over a simulated trail, note the incline visible behind the Libby.

Of course in the real world you're seldom climbing a steel grate incline, its a trail in the woods littered with stumps, rocks, mud, logs and small animals.

Got one of those courses at the new Land Rover dealership. However, after the hill there is a sideways path that looks kinda tricky for the Liberty. I really want to try the course though!! I'll sneak into it one day, and if they clear off the vehicles.

the disco is superior.

i have an 04 disco, and an 03 liberty. the disco has more clearance, better range, and has diff lock, the disco is steel chasis and aluminum body giving better weight for things like the side camber tilt, etc.

the liberty is better for gas mileage

and the guy who said a good driver can do a lot more, X2, just watch guys in there F150 4x4's get stuck, you will then understand, it isnt always speed that gets you through
