So is there much point in using a 'synthetic only' filter? Like if i run valvoline synthetic i would still probably only it for 3000-4000k tops.. So could we just run the conventional oil filters?

I run either the MOPAR filter or a K&N unit with Castrol Edge (previously Syntec) 5W-30. Just made the switch this past OC to full synthetic which reminds me I need to check the stick and see how it's doing.

yes. but i'd use a good quality one if your OIC is going to be extended.

I think those issues are largely corrected now; recently we had a problem where Purolater filters were tearing apart as well... used to be a top brand.. these things ebb and flow.
The important thing is to change the oil regularly and change the filter with it. Some owners can't even get that right...

Agreed, i just wonder the difference in the filtes? I notice they are a bit bigger, but how is one rated for 15000k and another only 4?

Usually it's the level of filtration afforded by the media.. one filters down to 1 micron, the other to .25 for example (not real numbers). Some filters with synthetic media also maintain their rigidity and function for a longer period of time. Most "traditional" filters, read: the cheap ones, use cellulose media.. fancy way of saying paper or cardboard. Soaked in 200 degree oil, these paper/cardboard/cellulose filters break down quickly compared to their synthetic counterparts.
I used the Fram extra guard filter (the more expensive one) years ago with no issues. Haven't used them in many years now.
I was using the Purolator Gold filter for a while with no issues.
I have also used the MOPAR filters when the KJ was new as I had some. Also used the NAPA Gold one once.
Always change the filter and I can't believe anyone would leave the old oil fiter in with the dirty used oil in it......that's like saving $10 for a filter and not protect your $3,000 engine....duh..
